I want some opinions from yall about my hardtop. I am restoring a 66' FJ40 and am keeping it mostly stock, but with a few modifications here and there. I am currently going to drive the car for a month after i am done restoring it. I am planning on painting the car either tan or olive with all black trim. Here is the dilemma... paint the hardtop its orginal white, or fit it to the rest of the car and paint it black?:hhmm: Love to hear your opinions!

Please, no black top. Keep it white. I have only seen a few that looked even halfway decent with other than a white top. And the all black trim is okay but not for a restored 66. If it's a restomod with a lift and flares and bigger tires go with the black. It can really look sharp on the right rig. It's yours to do what you will but you asked for opinions. Good luck. Tan and olive both are great choices as well.

I vote white because of originality and it is much cooler in the summer sun.

Keep it white - end of discussion ;-). Future buyers have an expectation of what a '40 nominally looks like, and that includes a white top.

Thanks guys! Yes i believe keeping it white will bring more value too. But the black top would fit the rig more. Decisions to be made!

I'm a traditionalist i.e. white top, white bezel, and for me at some point soon, OEM wheels (when I find them) and hubcaps (I have) … but, it would a boring world if we were all the same ...
:)

IMO if you are keeping it mostly stock as you say, I would keep the top white...especially if you are painting it a stock-ish color.

White cap and white grill bezel. The truck I'm building is all tan and black too but no way would I consider painting a black cap. My build truck only has white on those two pieces and will look just right.

How in the world would you even consider black in Reno? And you did say mostly stock.

Why is this even a question?...

PS: Just make sure the dam grill isn't upside down!

WHITE!

Tried the body match before, hated myself for it. Just didnt like the look sitting next to the other 40s. And hated the "nice jeep" comments. That and the white bezel are prob my only purist things.

Haha yes Reno is not very warm right now... but i think the white will look good

i have the same problem with my blue 45, the only white thing was the roof where as the bull bar and roll bars are black, i found putting white rims on it made the perfect balance between the 3 colours

Saw this thread interesting as I'm considering going with a black top. My cruiser is by no means original. My bezel is black, rims black the black top IMO would be great. Thoughts?

If other parts are not stock then the color does not matter as much. Not sure I would do a black fj40 with a black roof, in high school I had a tan one and painted the bezel and roof black, I still think that is a great combination, it looked much better then the white.

Very interesting you bring this up. My dad bought our '40 brand new in 1973, took it home and had the top painted freeborn red to match the rest of the rig because he didn't like it white. Fast forward 37 years and he gave it to me, though it's no longer freeborn red, the top is not white. It is always a huge discussion amongst my wife, me and the kids as to whether or not to paint it white. I like the white, but I want to honor some of the thing's my dad did to it...
