Keep hard top white???

Very interesting you bring this up. My dad bought our '40 brand new in 1973, took it home and had the top painted freeborn red to match the rest of the rig because he didn't like it white. Fast forward 37 years and he gave it to me, though it's no longer freeborn red, the top is not white. It is always a huge discussion amongst my wife, me and the kids as to whether or not to paint it white. I like the white, but I want to honor some of the thing's my dad did to it...

Looks nice. At least he didn't paint it black. :hillbilly:

Thanks for the compliment myquestoyota.

It's weird how my tastes have changed the last couple of years while being addicted to this forum. I love my '40 but I yearn to have an all original one ALSO. It's not a question of IF that will happen, more like WHEN, at least that's what I keep telling my wife ;-)

An FJ40 (or even an FJCruiser, for that matter) just doesn't look right with anything but a white top...cruiserkreutz, I can understand you leaving yours painted body color, to honor your Dad, plus you grew up with it like that...but 40's just look 'right' with a white top.

The Red FJ looks sharp, but for a black paint job I think the White is a must. Helps catch the eye with a traditional look.

This is gonna be random but, here I go.I think like most things, this is all about perspective. Most vehicles these days don't have white tops (the only one that comes to mind is the FJ Cruiser, may be more). To the younger generation or the uninitiated '40 lover that is not used to seeing rigs with white tops, it looks odd. Back in the day not only did 40's come with a white top, but Bronco's and Mini Coopers as well (probably many more). I find that once I explain to someone that doesn't know about the FJ40 original white cap and that's how they came, they tend to like the classic original look (my kids are a case in point). I find that my tastes have definitely swayed to the purist side after spending hours on this site. I even liked the bezel "upside down" before I knew better, now it drives me nutts!

Anyway, here is what mine would look like with a white cap. Taken after a snow fall.

The ONLY color that looks good (outside of OEM white) is some other shade of white. I've seen some done with an off-white top and bezel that looked sharp...but color-matched, black etc. never look good IMO.

The red 40 above looks much better with snow on the roof.

I am liking your rig with a white top, I'm sure the old man would understand.

Yeah he's pretty cool, I mean he GAVE me this '40 afterall. I will probably have it painted white when I take it off to replace the rubber seal and headliner.

Gel coat at the local boat repair facility, no paint.

Hmmmmm. I will have to read up on it, I know nothing about gel coating. We don't have any boat shops in the immediate area (probably 100 miles to the closest) do regular auto body shops do it?

There are do-it-yourself solutions, though I've never done it. Paint can peel. Gelcoat can not.

There are probably still fiberglass shops closer but there are a few threads here about those that did the do it yourself gel coat.

Years ago at the docks I was talking to an old deepwater sailor about sailboats. He said "there's only two colors to paint a boat, white or black. And only an idiot would paint it black!" Hmmmm... ;)

I'd really vote for keeping the stock white...all around, not just the roof. Looks so much better with the white.
