886s springs going on the front friday afternoon. will report back on general feel of truck. my experience with no sway bar + 886 springs on my tacoma was excellent. hoping for the same here.

i also feel like i might have an idea for the rear. There is only one cylinder in the back and one rigid - why not just replace the articulating cylinder (driver side) with a rigid link. It would need to be slightly longer than the existing rigid link, but could buy the same part for around $100 bucks and be modified to the correct length.

any smart engineer-type people able to tell me if that is a good idea or a very stupid idea?

I can't think of why not. I would use kdss spacers.

that's what im thinking! I already have KDSS spacers on front and rear. i think i could use them to match the lengths by taking the one of the existing rigid link and placing one on the driver side link... i will take some measurements and see if that could work

finally got the OME 886 springs on. thing rides like a dream! should have put the heavier springs on in the first place. body roll is much improved. definitely feels more planted now with the stiffer springs and wheel spacers in the absence of KDSS

Glad that has worked out for you

thanks! defintely not a replacement for KDSS, but $500 total instead of $7000 fix on this this old turd is definitely worth it to me. If I had a longer commute or spent more time on the highway or anything that would cause concern driving without the system I would maybe reconsider

Good to hear. I’m considering pulling the KDSS in the front and possibly rear for long travel. I think I’d replace the rear with something else but leave the front open.

Kai and a few others have proven that stiff rear sway bar is the way to go for trail rigs.

Good idea! I may do that too down the road. You can find some 5th gen 4runner guys that had KDSS that have pulled or disabled the system and installed long-travel. Seems to work out just fine!

The cylinder are much longer than the rigid link. Plus the KDSS bar are so stiff, without the accumulator it would ride really rough.

In my experience, on dirt I have to bypass KDSS to maintain good cornering traction. Otherwise it was way too stiff and transfer weight to much to the outside wheels. With KDSS on, it cause the vehicle to feel really skittish around corners on dirt. With KDSS off it still provide body roll control but the accumulator dampen the weight transfer and allowing the tire to maintain better grip without over powering it.

^Agree that if you were going to repurpose the existing sway bar mounts to use a fixed bar you would need to get different sways. The KDSS bars are huge since they don't really have to compromise roll control vs stiffness since its an active system.

Here we are discussing ways to circumvent and disable it, when over in the 250 and 300 forums, guys are bitching about how it’s not standard on every trim… shows how different that crowd is. It seems to be a costly failure point on older 150s and trucks that actually get wheeled. I would’ve been fine with the basic old school sway bars my Tacoma has.

There’s a spot where the lines come down and wrap around the frame under the drivers door… Personally I’m worried about coming down on a rock and breaking those lines. From factory, there’s a small skid plate that protects those lines, but it wasn’t compatible with my cbi sliders.

Been wheeling my 05 with KDSS for more than 5 years. For the kind of off roading I do, I really appreciate KDSS. To me that is something that is something that sets GX and LC apart from other SUV. Capable off road while not frightening to drive on Tail of the Dragons.

The OEM skid need to be trimmed a bit to fit most sliders.

my RSG sliders account for those lines, luckily. i can't remember, but i think i may have had to trim that shield a little bit. but definitely see your point that they are exposed.

i do wheel my truck fairly hard (although i haven't been out in MONTHS due to have two kids under two years old)...

i really like the KDSS system. i think it's great on-road and honestly great offroad as well. i've had tacomas and 4runners and really believe this thing is better both on and offroad. if i could snap my fingers and have some regular sway bars, i would - simply for reliability's sake. now that my KDSS is busted and i have installed the stiffer suspension, it honestly rides just like my tacoma did after deleting the front sway and adding stiffer springs. i like it. softer on road for sure, but still stable. have yet to take it offroad with the new set up, but assume it will perform well.

IIRC Victory now has a replacement plate for the OEM piece that works with their sliders. I had to trim a corner off the top of the OEM piece to work with my sliders.

I also think KDSS is a very cool system for a daily driver and/or the sort of moderate overlanding build that so many GXOR-ers do. It is expensive if it breaks, but you get a pretty significant bump in articulation plus better on road handling. Then you decide if you want to spend $7,000 fixing your KDSS or $7,000 on long travel...
