I did not see how this is sitting on top of each other? Is there a pad that fill this gap? Even if there is a pad. It might not have reload that hold it down. View attachment 3868488

The hinge to the center grafity of the spare tires give pretty long leverage. Any play in on the bearing and it would move a lot more at the tire.

Normally the middle part become the second point and reduce the leverage from the tire.

I see what you mean. There is a pad underneath:

The ease of having the tire mounted to the door (Prado style) is nice, but you lose the ability to open your rear window.
Having a swing-out, you have the use of your rear window, which we use often with our surfboards. But again, it's a double open every time you want something out back.
Tough decision.

Probably relies on tires size. I can still open my window, though I rarely do. Maybe 5 times in 4 years.

Is your spare a 225/25R13?
That would be about the only way I'd be able to see through and open my rear window without opening the swing out.

I can open my window with a 35x11.5x17 tire on the JW. Wheels are -10 offset, which might make a difference.

Resurrecting this one with the hopes that @Littlehouse and @BigSwede can provide an update on reliability/durability of the JW carrier since their last posts. (Hopefully you've both been able to do some wheeling this summer!) Any rust developing on the carrier or metal fatigue on the door?

I am a new owner of a '21 GX and after some research have settled with the fact that I'll need a solution for a full sized spare. I like the idea of the JW for ease of operation but the failure stories have me worried. My use case will be 90% family wagon and 10% northern MN forest service roads, no rock crawling.

Thanks in advance

You didn't ask me specifically, but I'm on year 3.5 with mine on and no major issues to speak of. Did replace some rusty hardware but that's minor. I recently had the spare off and inspected the door (from the outside) and found no metal fatigue on the door or the carrier itself.

Still going strong. Some powder coat has come off of the license plate holder, and will need repainting.

It is worth noting that my GX is a dedicated off road truck, meaning I don't drive it in the road salt much. I think if I did, I would need to annually take off the spare and hit any incipient rust with Rust Reformer.

Other than that, I have been very happy with the JW, I really didn't want to have to open a swing-out every time I wanted to open the rear door.

You're welcome to come and inspect it if you want to swing by Oak Grove some time.
