So far so good. I do need to order up the shims, though. Door still closes fine, but I can tell there is a little resistance when the latch hits.
Yep, best take care if it now while you still have interest and before the other "honey-do's" distract you. It will probably sag a wee bit more with age and become more misaligned, so my vote is shim it now.

I'll bring this one back from the dead.
Installed summer of 2020.
She's done now. The lower tab finally sheared off. The door is trashed, tearing apart at the top connection and smashed in at the lower section. I've got a new door in the shop, I won't be doing a door mount tire again.

What caused that lower piece to break off?

What size tire did you have hanging off there and how for how long? Did you do a lot of wash-board roads that may have helped it do fail?

Wow, brutal! Mine is still going strong but it’s a mall crawler and road trip vehicle. That thing has a ton of rust too. Where are you located?

The rust is more indicative of poor quality powder coating than anything

Since you're local, I'd reach out to Tuan and get a single swing out if you plan on getting a new carrier. It's supported by the frame, but still swings out when you open the door. I have one on my GX and it's been great.

PNW. It looked like that after the first couple years
I live in Minnesota, we have worse road salt than you I would think... mine doesn't look like that at all.

I have a 35 hanging on my JW, done a lot of off roading, no issues. Doubt he has anything heavier than I do.

That looks bad.....real bad.

An expensive repair to replace that entire door, paintwork, etc. Damn

The Prado door swap is a much better option.

That looks pretty slick but I have concerns that it only supported by the hinge and the leverage is still pretty long from the hinge. I am afraid that would wobble bad off road.

What do you mean? It's welded to the frame. Here's some detail shots:

It looks like there's support structure underneath the arm, similar to the JW. I don't think it latches to it though, so it's possible there's some vertical movement off of it still. Can't tell from the pictures.

I did not see how this is sitting on top of each other? Is there a pad that fill this gap? Even if there is a pad. It might not have preload that hold it down.

The hinge to the center grafity of the spare tires give pretty long leverage. Any play in on the bearing and it would move a lot more at the tire.

Normally the middle part become the second point and reduce the leverage from the tire.
