It's been pretty much beaten to death here on the Fourm. The Gates belts function fine, I ran them for 2 years. Other than sounding like you have a supercharger, they are very high quality. OEM is the way to go, and not very expensive.
The previous owner took out the idler pulley because it made noise after replacing the belts... he obviously tightened the belts to make up for the missing pulley... was this a mistake and should I put the pulley back on? What purpose does it serve?

My 3FE OEM set solved all my noise problems with my PO belts.
Corbs,
The Gates brand belts are in question here...not that gates = grooves.
I think you may be misunderstanding .
My OEM belts are smooth for two and one has teeth I believe.

Gotcha, you were right I was confused. :whoops: Thanks for the clarification!
Houston80, tomlite, corbs, and anyone else running non-OEM belts.
The OEM belts are high quality, inexpensive, and quiet. They come as a matched set for the dual belt unit plus an A/C belt. Put the pulley back on and install original Toyota belts from your dealer [preferably C-Dan ] and your belt noises will go away and you will avoid numerous other problems caused by running non-OEM belts.

Yes it was a mistake, it needs to be there otherwise Toyota would have left it off for you in the first place.

As Cbizkit mentions, ya think Toyota would put it there if it wasn't needed? It was probably squealing because the bearing was shot. A new one is cheap enough to put in and with the proper belts it should run fine and quite. Then when you see the po, give him a proper
I'm absolutely certain you don't have belts that say "Toyota" and "Gates" because I've had my 80 for 12 years and it has never spoken to me. I'm also absolutely certain that Toyota does not spec cogged belts on the 80, so if you have 'em, they came from the dark side (non OEM).
FYI, the stock belts come as a matched pair that are actually hand tied together from the factory to be perfectly matched. If these two belts (which are routed identically) were not matched, they'd "fight" each other and constantly make some noise as well as wear very prematurely. The third one does not need to be matched. They all say "Mitsubishi" on them...
OK - To you Purists, I gave up and removed the Ideler Pulley. Everything is Quiet now. I placed it in a Plastic Bag to be Replaced the next time I buy OEM Belts.

Okay Idaho, you were right. . . I double checked my belts (main one at least) and while it DOES say Toyota on it, it also says Mitsubishi in another spot. So I'd venture to guess they aren't Toyota OEM. Time to buy some new belts.

Hopefully soon, as I'm pretty sure the engineers had a reason for putting an idler pulley on there. :
Someone in the mechanical world could fill me in; but I think the idler pulley is the dampen the belts' vibrations. Removing it could cause the belt(s) to jump; and only God knows when...

The idler pulley needs to be in there for you to get the full benefit of having 2 belts. If you look at the pulley there is some axial rotation in it. Since it is impossible to get 2 perfectly matched belts Toyota had to put this pulley in to balance the tension between the 2. The belt that is ever so slightly smaller causes the pulley to deflect a little and apply pressure to the larger one. This balances the tension between the two. Not having this pulley basically leaves you with one belt loose or one belt over tightened. Neither senario is ideal.
Incidently, this pulley doesn't deflect the belts that much and if after installing new belts you notice that one is tighter than the other, the bearing is probably shot and the pulley's position is far enough out that it can't do it's job.
My pulley is starting to make noise, and I mistakenly got the AC tensioner pulley cause the price was right.
I then thought I would just get the other pulley and the price was $66. I guess I need to bite the bullet and get it.
She really needs to know we love her, cause our old white 94 is gonna be PO'd when a darker complected 96 with lockers pulls in this weekend.
