Any of you guys ever been to Jones Gap State Park? If so, what is it like? Anyone done any fishing there?

Looks like it is in Alan's backyard and not too far from David.

Camped a lot in Jones Gap. Fishing is okay. Not the biggest fish but worth fishing. Great place to go hiking. The road leading into it is the road we sponsor for adopt a highway.

That's what my brother just told me. I've never seen it. Trophy trout designation; those are few and far betweeen!!

Sounds like I am headed there soon to camp and fish with him.

it is a beautiful river........ if it does turn out to be some killer fishing, let us know I would love to get back in fly fishing I haven't been since my sophmore year :(, and the middle saluada is only 45 mins away :)

I did community service for a class in ceasars head state park which connects to jones gap theres some awesome views through that valley when your hiking. They told me they only allow like 8 people a week to fish there or something like that. Its a really small number. So you might want to check into that first.

Been there a few times. Nice Waterfall. Fishing is okay but not native. It's a put and take area. The state begins to stock about this time every year.

I hiked in one winter when all the trails were snow & ice-covered. Really beautiful but hard to stay on yer feet. I had a couple of black and blue marks from slipping and falling. I think this park gets much less use than the other parks that are accessible right off 11.

Jones Gap

The section right above the park (as you're driving in) is a sign up section and there are some hogs in there. It is maintaned by our local Trout Unlimited chapter, you have to sign up and only 3 people are allowed to fish it per day. Beautiful area, worth the trip, campsites are strung up and down the mountain.

Fished it several dozen times. Caught a 17.5 inch Brown female there in Oct of 2000. I think it swam upstream from the trophy beds downstream of the park.

Flies to use: Zug Bug, Yellow Trude, Ant. The Zug will kill 'em.

Thanks for all of the info, guys. Yeah, my brother told me it was a stream that needed reservations and had very limited, regulated traffic. He is chummy with a guy who runs a fly shop in Greenville and we're getting some intel on some new streams and this is one that has peaked his interest.

After trout fishing western NC / SC most of my life, it is cool to discover some new, productive water (to us anyway).

I am trying to get him to come along wheeling but this is the time of year we usually live in the streams searching for tight lines. I'm overdue for some trout time. I'll probably bring my stuff this weekend and mess around in the little stream near the 2nd night's camp.

What you ought to do one weekend is to hike from Burrels Fords all the way down to to where it intersects with hwy 28. It's a 14 mile hike but it's along the Chattoga river the whole way. With only one other access point about 2 miles from the end. It's a great trail and some even better fishing. With hardly anyone on it for miles.

That's a great idea, Marshall. I've done a good bit of fishing on the Chattooga and have always done well. Back in the day, it wasn't nearly as crowded as it gets now. That's why I stopped going - the crowds.

I think I'll float that one by my brother too. Maybe turn it into a camping trip.

Winter would probably be the best time to do it. The Chattooga is the snakiest trout stream I've ever been on...

Maybe we should do a club trout fishing / camping / wheeling weekend??
