I've done a search, and still the ??? Re-smog? UPDATE!!!

I need to do a complete resmog. I've has this truck for 6 months, and have been driving with out an inspection sticker, but really want to re-smog and get it on the road for travel. I bought this thing with blind love. Blind being the key word. Blind to all the vacuum leaks, rust, carb trouble. I think I was high on all the exhausts fumes on the test drive. I HAD to have it. But before my love turns into hate, I really need to put alot of work into the engine.

I figure I can't really get started on the vacuum trouble without the smog equipment in place. Or at least it seems like less trouble in the end since I need to pass emissions anyway.

So does anyone have inexpensive smog equipment they have removed?

Has anyone else done I re-smog?

Any help is greatly appreciated.

I only have the Haynes manual, for now. But after reading ya'll's thoughts, I know I need the FSM.

FYI, I have no prior mechanical knowledge or experience, outside what I've learned here and done on my FJ. Axle rebuild. Horn fixed with 3 washers. Gutted interior. Steering gear box adjustment. Replaced front brake lines from axle to caliper. All done while online, reading this web-site.

But if I am to make good on this invesment, and keep this truck alive I need to do some serious work, quick. Someone did some really shotty "custom work" on this thing. Horrible job. The PO only put 700 occassional miles on it, in 3 years.

Serious work, for me, will require serious help. Thanks in advance.

Post a pic of the engine compartment.

Exactly what do you have and what is missing.

You may be better off selling the truck and buying another.

Get the factory emissions manual.

Your best be may be to find a complete wrecked truck, with all the bits. A full resomg from scratch with no parts is very expensive. Just the EGR valve is over $125, the air pump reman at least $150, carb work $300, new CAT $150 (aftermarket), ABV--$???? hideously expensive if available.

I re-smogged a 40, but the PO gave me all the parts in a box with the cruiser. At least they still worked. It was still a PIA.

This is a good lesson for anyone thinking about desmogging a 60.

I am with Cruiserdrew on this one your best bet is to find a wreaked or rusty but complete truck and strip what you need. 100% for sure you need the 2f engine emission control repair manual, it is Toyota publication # RM36043.

Thanks guys. Already some help. This site is great. Although you are probably right about selling this one. I just can't do it. My pride won't let me admit I bought this truck without thinking it through. Plus I've always wanted to resurect a dieing vehicle, and I've always loved these cruisers.

It is a good idea to look for another. Maybe find one at a strip it yourself yard, and take what I need. But I don't know what I need. So I will definitely take a post a photo when I get to my shop. But warning what you will see, is not for the faint at heart.

I have a few extra smog parts I would be willing to part with. Let me know what you need, it's yours if I have it.

Also, x2 on the emissions manual. You will most definitely need it for this project. Here is the phone # to Toyota Publications 1-800-622-2033.

you guys are awesome. Here is an attempt to post pics. I will call Toyota first thing tomorrow.

more pics...

There are quite a few hoses unconnected, and parts the have openings for what I assume are hoses...or something like them.

Okay, take a deep breath, maybe two. From the pictures, I don't think you are in bad shape. In fact, it just looks like you need to replace a couple hoses and re-route some others.

Here is the big problem - you still need to figure out what works . . . You still have your smog pump and your ABV/ASV/ACV and those are probably the two most expensive items. But you need to figure out if they, and other components, work. Buy the emissions manual from Toyota publications - it isn't too expensive.

You are missing at least two smog hoses (the ones that should be going to the air cleaner). They are VERY expensive if you get Toyota Hoses, like $50 each. But they are also different from just air hoses or heater hoses due to the heat they see and they are pre-formed. I'm sure you can get them from members here.

The strange things is that they removed the smog hoses, but the pump is still connected. If it works, I would think it's pretty noisy since it must be pumping air right out of the pump. It could be gutted to fool the smog inspectors, but that doesn't explain why they removed the tow hoses.

My guess is that your catalytic converter will be shot since the air injection system wasn't working and it probably overheated. But who knows.

It iwll be tedious, but your are in far better shape than I was when I bought mine.

Of course, I am still trying to pass smog.

Good luck.

Yeah, you don't look to bad. Like Marc said, the biggest thing is to make sure the parts are operational. Hopefully once you have the manual in hand, most of this stuff will make more sense. I'll take a look and see if I have some hoses.

Whoever did that "desmog" should be flogged. They just simply left open a direct line into the motor, so air can get in unfiltered. That's just lazyness. Hopefully your EGR valve is there (bet it is-this lazy desmogger would n't have gone to the trouble to remove it), it looks like your ABV is there. Those smog hoses are kind of pricy, but much better than the ABV itself.

Someone did replace the vacuum hoses-those are not original. As to just leaving vacuum hoses open-that's a certain sign of a total hack job.

Edit--looked more carefully at your pics. The EGR is there, but the vacuum hose to open it is disconnected. You may get very lucky just hooking it all back up. Does the airpump make any bad noises or blow air out the output?

The air pump doesn't make any noise or blow air when I let it idle. I do however smell gas fumes. Is that cuz the choke was totally open and it was burning rich? I know it is a different issue, just wondering.

Also, the air pump doesn't seem to be connected to anything. Three holes, 2 large, one small, are totally open.

And pardon my ignorance, but which is the ABV, and which is the EGR? I can't tell from the Haynes.

Thanks again guys

Well, not much, but it's a start! Air rail, check valve, and hose to ABV. Let me know if you want it.

To answer your question, the EGR is the exhaust gas recirc, and it is the object attached to your intake manifold, has the metal ribbed hose coming out of the bottom. The ABV is the air bypass valve, and it is located on the DS fender.

If your pump isn't blowing air, someone likely took the vanes out and ran it as just a pulley. You'll need a new one. The ABV has big hose nipples for like 5/8 rubber hose. The EGR is connected to the exhaust manifold through the dreaded and leaky EGR pipe. It may have gone bad so they removed the vacuum to keep it from working.

You have to go through systematically and go point by point to get it hooked up right. Your best bet is another FJ60 and compare side by side. Good luck, I hope for your sake that all the pieces work.

Now I'm learning. I still have the air rail and check valve, but the hose is cut. I would be willing to take the whole part as pictured if you are willing to part with it. PM me what steps to take, and I'll reply my contact info.

You guys kick @ss.

Anybody know what part to ask for, for the other missing hoses? I'd buy you all a beer, or soda, right now if I could.

Edit: found used and rebuilt airpump at cruiserparts.net Good idea? Is is worth the 600 bucks for a new one?

You're going to need most of the hoses shown here, except #60, this is the one I have. You have a few options as far as getting new hoses. If it were me, I would try and find as many used ones as possible before spending tons of cash on new. Cruiserparts.net might have a lot of what you'll need, also try the parts for sale section here on MUD.

HTH-

P.S. PM me w/ your address and I'll send the stuff.

Called Toyota this morning, and ordered #'s 36043, 36044, 36104. $150 for the set. ouch. She was worried about # 36044, but I told her the guys on ih8mud say it's the right one for FJ60. She wrote down the address and thanked me for the input, as she wants to tell people with land cruisers about the site when they call. nice.

Where are you located? I worked out a lot of my smog issues by parking side-by-side with an unmolested rig. Then you have a good reference for how things should look and what you need to fix.

I am in Philadelphia, and don't know of any unmolested trucks in the area. I know 1 Fj60, but the owner is awfully busy, and I don't know him well enough to convince him to come to my shop. His and the company he is partners in built some of the cars for the remake of Starsky and Hutch. (among others) He isn't much into working on his FJ. Only when he has to, and this wouldn't be one of those times. I'm thinking once I get the manual in the mail (Thursday) and get some hose (vacuum line, 5401k52, and K5401k54, i think, ships today) I will have a decent place to start. I'll still need all the emissions hoses, besides the one PAFJ has on hand, and an air pump if anyone has any of these laying around... Thanks again.

The 62 emissions system is different than the 60 right? Cus of the FI? I just remembered of a cruiser I could look at for a point of reference but it is a 62. Different? Same?
