The 62 emissions system is different than the 60 right? Cus of the FI? I just remembered of a cruiser I could look at for a point of reference but it is a 62. Different? Same?

Completely different.

maybe i can help you since i live in philadelphia give me a call 215.760.3644
some time in the late afternoon hours john.

The emissions on the carburetor equipped FJ60 are performed by the large bead type catalytic converter. It needs a good blast from a good quality air pump to overcome the one way valves at the upper and lower air injection ports and get the beads red hot.
A new air pump is only available from Toyota and costs about $900. plus. But with a new pump and a good quality converter, emissions can be expected at 0.00% CO (carbon monoxide) and HC (hydrocarbons) in PPM at 11 loaded and 09 at idle.
This has been my reading the last two years with 250,000 miles on an 84 FJ60, without the head ever removed. I run 20-50 Castrol GTX since I purchased it new and HP-3001 K&N oil filters. Only use a dry Toyota air filter as the oil type K&N type air filter will ruin the air pump over time.
Rebuilt air pumps just do not work and are a waste of funds.

update

I got the manual and hoses, and had time last night to run a few. I dove n where I found the first mis runs from PO. From VSV 2 for AI. A few were misrun, but I seem to be making way. Here are pics:

now questions

The manual shows 1 VSV(1) of 1 type, and VSV(2) as another type. I have 2 the the first type. Is the VSV(1) on the sidewall, or on the wheel well? Pic is too big.

I don't see this VCV in the manual. Opposite side of air cleaner from carb, near HIC valve, pictured.

What is this iece that leads down into the exhaust? It seems to connect to smog pump; my pump is gutted.

Making good progress. First question, the VCV you speak of is for venting the dizzy cap, and your right that it's not covered in the manual. Second question, shown in the picture is a check valve and right above it is an open pipe. These two should be connected together. This is part of the AI system.

HTH

There's a drawing floating around somewhere showing how the hoses hook up on the VCV attached to the air filter housing. I'll try and find it.

you guys are awesome

Thanks PAFJ, again. I couldn't have done 1 thing on my truck without the help of you guys on this site.

One the road again....soon

Well,

Thanks to PAFJ, schmukster, cando john, and cando garage...I'm idling at around 750 to 800 and I'm keeping an idle with no problem. Schmukster sent me the ABV, and all associated hoses, clamps and valves. PAFJ sent me the air rail check valve and hose. Used OEM Smog pump, and new OEM catback exhaust and OEM exhuast gaskets from cruiserparts.net. Catco catlytic converter from discountconverters.com. Check valve and one piece oil pan gasket from autozone.com. 3mm and 6mm vacuum hose from mcmastercarr.com. Hours of reading this site, hours of cussin and drinkin and a few hours help from some friends, and all I need to do is sew up some holes in the floor board and I can get inspected. Some photos and some questions...

Pic 1:
There is a black vaccuumed switch on the side wall, running to my PCV hose, and in this pick to a diaphram near the carb. What is this diaphram, and is the vacuum line run correctly?

Pick 2:
same switch, vacuum run to the PCV. Correct.

Forgive me, if this is already answered.

Pick 3:

HIC valve and passenger side VCV run to distributor, correct now?

BTW, you guys kick @ss

one more pic, of the gutted interior

This is the next project. I will build an platform from tail gate to rear of front seats for storage and sleeping. Rear heavy duty drawers, similiar to others we've all seen here, but I will hinge it at the rear seat, to flip it up for seating and down for sleeping.

And pick 2; my other toy in the garage, just to share, and I'm already missing it as fall has finally kicked in here in Pennsyslvania. If I had the time and gear, I'll ride it all winter, but...well, maybe I'm just a wuss. Plus now that I have the cruiser, even on beautiful summer days, I let the bike sit and I work on the damn truck. Talk about addiction...I almost gave up drinking for this damn thing. Well, almost.

One hose I can not figure out where it goes!

Spotted this picture on mud.... All my hoses are hooked up, but this one is missing. Well I can not figure out where the old end of the hose goes!

Oh... time to rebuild a carb, so above diagram is great. I wanted to replace hoses, but will flag them first.

mine goes to a black vacuum switch on the side wall of the engine bay. It's in the pic above, top left, side view. I'm not 100% it's correct though.
