I received my stimulus check. And am about to take the plunge. Replacing the POS Holley on my F engine.
I am leaning towards the Weber 38 as I have headers.
I am certain another modified holley isnt what I want.
my options are pretty limited.
Please talk me into or out the weber.

Hello Dirtsquirt,
I am also interested in a new carb. thinking about the weber progressive.

let me know what you get.

I ran a NEW Weber progressive carb that replaced my old outlaw Weber 38. I thought It would save me gas but it didn't. I lost my bottom end torque and my acceleration was sluggish. Six months later I replaced it with a new Weber 38 Outlaw. My torque is back, and other then running rich (progressive included) she runs perfect. I still have my progressive if you're interested but I wouldn't recommend it. .02

Aisan;)....really

Ed

Aisan........The power loss mutilator.

It's got what F's crave! :)

[It's got electrolites]

So.....are you in favor or out of favor? I cun't tell from your post:confused:

"Cun't" is a typo, BTW;)

Aisin

The aisin in superior why?
It runs on steep inclines, declines, and side hills?
gets superior gas mileage while providing massive power?
you can get em just about anywhere?
The above is wild speculation.

i guess what i am trying to say.
Why get one? I want the best option.
If the reason is they are OEM pssh!
If you got some good reasons they are better than the
common option. i would like to hear them.

Thanks for the advice Ranger.

The problem with the search is I am not smart enough to
type the text in the pic's. properly. I have tried to do at least 20 search's but have only successfully completed 2.
Trying at least 10 different word pics. each time.
So in lieu of any good info. I will order my 38 in the morning.

PS am i the only one that has problems with the search function"?

In order to allow you to "consider the source", let me first stay that my 40 is diesel, so I have no personal experience on the carb debate. Also my only hands on time with a carb of any time was with a Carter on my old AMC 258 which I **royally** fxxxed up. That said, I read a LOT of threads on here, and I've learned to use the search...

There are a large number of opinions that say the Weber is "fiddly" and is [somehow?] intrinscially incapable of handling angles. Downey said it well in https://forum.ih8mud.com/40-55-series-tech/222981-carb-choices.html:
(a) regardless of brand name of carburetor, the air/fuel mixture has got to be correct, and you should be able to make it correct (jetting and adjustment) regardless of brand name.
(b) enough folks on this forum like stock Toyota carbs that I'm going to keep my mouth shut about them. Evidently they have had luck with them, I haven't.
(b) besides Webers being smallish, they really are not (and can not be) set up for off road use---in terms of float bowl breathing and baffleing, or prevention of fuel spillage.
(c) I've been selling Holleys for 38 years, and in that 38 years Downey, Holley, and Moroso have invented zillions of little upgrades to make Holleys work great in off road terrain and high altitude. Generally those who bad mouth a Holley have never had one properly set up for off road terrain!!!!!

Most people agree that, among Webers, the 38 wins against the 32/36. (There is at least one person who feels the opposite, see https://forum.ih8mud.com/40-55-series-tech/686-new-carb.html)

From casual reading, it seems to me that the "Aisin/Weber" debate is far more lopsided than the "Ford/Chevy" debate; based on user opinions it seems the Aisin is the better carb. Support for this:

I would rebuild your old carb. Keep things simple and stock. Even a well tuned Weber install won't give you much more power than a rebuilt stocker, and you won't need to swap distributors to a early/non-usa. I know I'm a purist, but in many cases a new or rebuilt stock replacement is as good if not better than other options that will work. Normally the power increase people get from those type of replacements is just because the original part was worn out. Its hard to beat Toyota engineers. About once a month over at the SOR forum we would get someone that had installed a Weber and "now its not running right." There's less of a risk of that if you go with a stock replacement or rebuild.

I have a weber carb (l6) and when I go up hills my cruiser if fine if I give it gas but if I need to stop and let off the gas to apply the brake it will fade off till it dies. Is this unavoidable or is it my carb is tweaked? What is the general outlook one these carbs for off roading?
Lots to be said about the Holley. Most bad. I love them but I would never suggest you put one on in place of a ASAIN. You will get more power, better MPG and smoother running out of the holley. it will kick your ass off road until you mess with it for a LONG time. Expensive, you are looking at $400ish before all is said and done. There is a reason why everyone uses them. Very strong, reliable, easy to get parts easy to fix etc... Cool thing about an ASAIN is that it fits your truck and is designed to work with your motor. For the money involved I would get your carb rebuilt or buy new. Contact Jim C. According to him the best possible carb set up is a 76 adapted to be a NON USA.

IMO the weber would be a downgrade compared to the stock carb.
I agree. Stay with the stock carb. Works the best with the stock engine. Great in most all off road conditions. Had a holley on my '71 and went back to stock and was much better. Have a webber on my '78 and am going back to stock. A properly running stock carb will do all you ask it to...
My 79 had a weber 38/38 on it when I bought it, and I purchased a new one shortly afterwards. It's a good carb for street use and some mild off road stuff, but it doesn't like steep angles. I've had mine stall out quite a few times climbing stuff, and at times it's been a bit hairy getting it started again. My truck was converted to a cable linkage, so going back to stock may be tricky for me. But I never had any issues with the stock carb on the 77 I had.

Wow! Now that's a good answer. I will have to agree with the original poster and say that I struggle with the search. I am getting a little better at it, but am amazed how some of you guys find the stuff and find it fast.
