This will also explain to Dan why he got a call from a muffler shop about me...
So, I've got the 2LT-E in my pickup (see the thread in the signature). I had the exhaust done at Jim's Route 66 Muffler (on Central and Jefferson) and have always been impressed with their work. Anyway, after a year or so, the flex pipe that we put on back then just didn't have enough flex to handle the torque of the 2LT-E and developed a crack. Not really a gib deal, as it was after the turbo, so it wasn't loud or anything, but I decided that I really needed to stop sending any corrosive exhaust gas into my engine compartment (also, the smoke coming from under the hood when I started it in the morning was a bit disconcerting).
Anyway.... After a while the guy who is tasked with welding in the new flex pipe comes and asks me what size engine is in it. I wonder why he cares, as it's not like I'm doing anything to increase performance or anything. Long story short, when he was tacking the exhaust onto the turbo dump the gun somehow came into contact with the oil filter and put a pinhole in it. So he was just checking to see what engine I had so he could go get a filter and send me on my way.
Now, I've been down the filter road before. Luckily I nearly have the Toyota part number memorized at this point (90915-30002: I did that off the top of my head just now), but he insists on calling brand K, because they would be closer. I told him that I was rather positive that my stock of 3 filters at home is without a doubt the largest stock of 2LT-E filters in the state. Anyway, brand K predictably couldn't come up with a part number or anything approximating it. So I told him he could call American and ask for Dan, as if he couldn't look it up, he could probably look up my previous order of filters (Dan: I don't know if you can or not, but it's wishful thinking, right?). As Dan is telling him that they don't have any of these filters, but that they are in the warehouse in Ontario I'm telling him basically the same thing, because that's just how these things are. See, I normally order a couple new filters before I go to change the oil with the last filter (in fact, I was planning on stopping by American after the muffler shop to put in another order!
).
But NAPA has in the past carried a filter that works (but sucks, because it's not the OEM filter, and it's like half the size--but it would at least get me home). Of course we didn't have internet access to look it up on the Toyota Diesel website, but two numbers stuck out in my mind: 1515 and 1536. I did remember that when I bought the NAPA filters before I had a good Toyota number that I had bought two filters, and that one of them was wrong--and that the bad part number crossed over to the same PH8A that everything else uses. So we called NAPA and found that the 1515 crossed to PH8A, and that they had a 1536 in stock. So the owner (Jim) drove down there and picked it up. When he got back to the shop though, the 1536 was at least twice as long as the Toyota filter, and definitely not the right one.
Again: I knew I had one Toyota filter and two NAPA filters sitting in the shop here at home (I don't know why I took the little NAPA filter out from behind the seat where I usually keep it), but it was getting late. So, because it was time to close up shop and all, the owner gave me the keys to his wife's *eep to drive home.
So, that's why I drove a *eep home today. It sucked so bad. I had to go get in Dad's FJ-40 just to go get the filters down from the shop to get the feel of *eep off of my hands. Seriously, a newer model jeep handles like frikken crap! The 29 year old FJ-40 has tighter steering! I'm glad none of you know where I live, because it's embarrassing to have a "Sahara Edition" jeep in the driveway.
I guess I'll drive the FJ-40 in tomorrow to order up some new filters (and a few other parts for the FF rear axle for my cruiser).....
Good times!
Dan
PS-I should add that I am still very satisfied with Jim's 66. They do great work (with heavier pipe than other shops I've looked at), and the filter pinhole was just a freak accident--and they just got hosed by having it be on my overly exotic engine.
