Star's work is fine. It's their tendency to low ball quotes. For example they refused to add the sector shaft or pittman arm despite the obvious need to replace at least the shaft.

My folks and myself have both go through them before once. Both times they lowballd the quote by a grand or more.

Progressive stopped by today (told me between 10 AM and noon, they called to let me know they were almost there at 10:05 AM) to give me their estimate.


The breakdown is something like this:

Parts (Replaced)
Front Bumper End Cap
Rear Quarter Panel
Rear Quarter Panel Flare/Moulding/etc
Rear Marker Lamp
Rear Combination/Taillight Lamp
Rear Bumper End Cap
Rear Bumper Brackets

That's a somewhat summerized list, but you get the gist of it.

Total: $2166.69



Labor
Body: $1340
Refinish: $620
Mechanical $12

Total: $1972


Additional Costs:
$372
(4 Wheel Alignment, etc)



This did not include any mechanical damage (so no sector shaft), but Dan's quote probably didn't either.


Total price: $4,510.69

Okay, so now's the point where I decide what to do.


I can cash out. They will write me a check right now less my deductible ($500). If the claim goes against the other party, then they will reimburse me for the deductible. I can wait until the claim is finalized, and skip waiting on the deductible. I would push to have the sector shaft added to the estimate and covered under it (and since it's only about $300 for the shaft and rebuild kit, I think it would be).

I can have Progressive's shop fix it. Would basically be back to where it was initially.

I can have the shop of my own choice fix it.


I'm leaning towards the cash out option.
 
If you plan to wheel it agressively and bang it up some, I think I would take the money and buy some bumpers.

Insist that the shaft is included. I would certainly want to get the shaft on this one.:doh: Take the $ and fix it yourself. I'll bring a BFH over and I work cheap!:grinpimp:

I would defenitely get a ruling that she was 100% responsible and collect from her insurance first. If your insurance company gets involved I am sure it will cost you in the long run.
 
Aren't the first offers always a lowball? I'd think about waiting. Maybe they offered so much, because they're worried about having to defend her in small claims court, when it's so obvious it's entirely her fault. But if the first offer is a lowball, that means they expect to pay out more?

I'm no expert, this is just what I've heard about insurance companies.
 
X2 on their lowball offer. take it to an alignment or front end specialist to get the sector shaft fix quoted, and add that to their repair quote. i might push it closer to a total loss though, but at least you should be able to deal for a higher cash out. if they do, id take it then get the steering sorted & aligned. then strip the cladding & flares or even find replacements here, linex, tail lamp, side marker and fr/rr bumpers. done. maybe once you're all fixed up...you might have enough left for a full tank of fuel :D

We have the same insurance company.


Evidentially as of yesterday Progressive had not been able to get ahold of her, which is why the claim being filed against her is being delayed. I was told it'd take about week to go through their process if she drags it out.

So on Saturday I got a check from Progressive. Just over $5200. They included the price quote I got from a local shop to replace the steering box (with an aftermarket, about $500 for the box + labor).

Went by Harbor Freight and had a nice little spending spree picking up a bunch of items I've wanted. I picked up the 5 Piece Front End Service Tool Set which (hopefully!) has everything I need to pop the pittman arm off the sector shaft.

New (larger) sector shaft, pittman arm, and seals are on their way from Mr. Cdan. I'm not planning a full rebuild of the box, only going in it far enough to replace the sector shaft. It's not leaking, making noise, or otherwise having any issues so I'm thinking I can get away with it. It should greatly simplify the process, looks pretty straight forward based on what I'm seeing from the FSM.

I'm thinking about replacing the power steering paper clip and possibly going to a larger power steering reservoir while I'm doing this. We'll see how ambitious I get....
