Looking forward to reach the end of the world
I've almost returned to the world of the 70 series Landcruiser!
Long story short. 11 years ago, I went to a machinist shop to borrow a tap to make threads in my manifold in what was at the time, my new project. I wanted to install an EGT.
Talking to the old gentleman in the shop, I told him about a newly-acquired 60 serie that I was restoring, as well as the other Landcruisers I owned, including a BJ70 that I really liked but sold to finance my other project.
I saw a gleam in his eye. He told me he'd owned an HJ60, then asked me to follow him into his shop to show me, and the among machinist's equipment, under a tarp, a BJ70 that hadn't moved for a while. A tree had fallen on the roof. The truck was dismantled, the windows removed. I estimated that this vehicle has been in storage since the 1990s.
I was impressed, but not too interested, as I wasn't looking for another project. I didn't inspect it. Since then, I've been to see the gentleman once, about 6 years ago, to give him my contact details. Just in case...
Last week, the gentleman phoned me. I recognized him immediately. He invited me to come and see his JEEP
, which he now wanted to sell.
I'm currently looking for another project as an overland vehicle. An SWB 70 series is clearly not in my plans. But if it's not too expensive, I might be tempted.
So I went to see this famous BJ70. It was under a pile of miscellaneous stuff in a well-stocked garage. It appeared to be in correct shape, but the roof needs rebuilding and the body need a full paint job. But this BJ70 only has 62,000km! The pedals are new and the carpet, apart from the dust, is spotless. It's disassembled, but I'm not at all intimidated. I've already dismantled and reassembled Landcruisers on several occasions.
The gentleman asked too much for my taste. I let it go, but who knows, maybe he'll call me back and ask for a much lower price.
Here are few pictures
