I was under my 78 FJ-40 replacing an oil pressure sender when I noticed something.

The right front engine mount looked like the bottom nut was not tightened all the way. I grabbed two wrenchs(for both ends of the bolt) and attempted to tighten. The nut did not tighten on the bolt. The nut along with the bolt turned many times at the bottom with the top of the bolt staying put. :hhmm:

Is the bolt broken in the mount? Am I missing something? Do I need to replace the bolt or entire mount? Will I need an engine hoist?:meh:

From my experience those are two different pieces and not a single bolt. Googling pictures might give you a better understanding. In the picture it looked like the mount was still in good shape. I would just tighten that nut down and check the others. But I don't think replacing the mount is necessary.

Sounds like the bolt is spinning in the mount. You will need to undo the nut instead of trying to tighten it. If it will not unscrew, your mount is screwed. You can't replace the bolt! You have a bolt on one side from engine to mount, rubber sandwich and thn another bolt on the chassis side.

Imagine a metal plate wil a bolt welded into it. Rubber is glued onto the plate to cover the head of the bolt and another plate glued onto that. You end up with two plates with a bolt sticking out the side and rubber sandwiched between them.

Thanks. I was thinking it might be two bolts. So the bottom bolt head should be held in place or welded in place on the mount plate. Should I or must I replace the mount? The top bolt is tight but again the bottom nut is not tight on the bolt. I could probably get the nut tighter.

As was stated, if you can turn the nut and it does not tighten, your mount is toast. You will need to replace it. It is not difficult nor expensive. The problem that could occur is that you play around tightening it and then can no longer loosen the nut. That will take much more effort to remove the nut from the stud on the fxxxered mount. GL
