Hello

Have a 2011 Toyota Land cruiser with 123 k km ( 76 k miles). First owner since 2011.
Truck was built on 08.2011

I was doing my regular inspection and found the pink mess under the hood.
Coolant a tad lower than the L level. I did add it to H level. Did turn on the truck left it Parked. see pics.
Is this another radiator issue ? Has Toyota improved the design and we just replace it with the same s***ty design ? Could it be a hose or water pump ?

Sure looks to me like the same radiator issue this community has seen for a while.

Has Toyota improved the design ?

Are Denso or Nissens ( aluminum) better options that sticking with Toyota ?

What do you mean by “another”?

Toyota did update the design a while back. It is better than aftermarket. People seem to have a hardon for all-aluminum but are ignoring that it can present its own problems. Other than this known issue which appears to have been resolved factory radiators are very high quality.

Everything you want to know is in that thread.

Is it normal for these radiators to fail at 76 k miles ? ( year model 2011).

i have not taken in for service as los of things closed the the covid 19.

If it isn't obvious where it is coming from it's time for a pressure test. Any decent garage or they aren't terribly expensive.

Welcome to the strawberry milk club... ;) :hillbilly:

Same as everyone’s radiator.

The weak spot goes back to at least 1999, since my 100 series did same.
And ya... same dumb indent for the model stamp on top. Crazy silly...but meh. Oooooold news. ;)

It's 45+ pages of great reading, everything you'd ever want to know about that outstanding piece of crap radiator

Was thinking if the top plastic part alone can be changed rather than the full radiator ?

No.
I’m not even sure why someone would want to..

I think it's an age issue at this point. A good mechanic friend of mine told me about ten years for a radiator is normal.

There have been quite a few 14 and 15 radiator cracks. My 13 needed one in 2018.

Thing is, millions of plastic tank radiators turn brown and crusty and still resist popping, let alone thousands of them that look fine on the outside fail in the exact same spot while others from even the same manufacturer go twice as long & far.

It is clearly a design issue.

Has the design gotten better over the years?

Yes. Details in the long radiator failure thread.

IMO every 200 owner that plans to go past 80k needs to spend the time going through the whole thing.

Agree. I changed mine proactively so I’d avoid having it fail at some bad time and/or location.

Update:
I Ended up changing the top
Plastic part with an aftermarket one. The radiator shop mentioned that the radiator is still in good shape.
At what temperature does the thermostat usually kicks in ?

This is the damaged one :
