is there a hook that locks the hood-windshield hooks secure

I have a split hood on my 79, but newer windshield frame. Should I just drill some of the holders with pads into my hood?

hijack off

if you have the w/s frame with the wipers on the bottom, you will need to go with the holders/pads since the old rubber bumpers aren't tall enough. also, don't just bolt them where the old stuff is. the newer windshield frames use different hinges that move the frame forward a bit when it goes down, so measure carefully.

1) find a trashed hood and drill out the hook retainer (they are spot welded in three spots) than bolt them in and replace the hardwear...or.....

2) or find the later set-up in post #11 and be done with it.

3) leave it be...as cool as it looks ....its a PITA to drive off road in the woods with the windshield down...its a PITA to drive on road with the windshield down...i have only driven with mine down 4-5 times in over 17 years.

The hood hooks are the same as the apron hooks tha hold the hood down so If you can't find a hood maybe a pair of old aprons.

This got me thinking...the hooks on my '75 hood never could reach the "latch/catch" on my '74 windshield. I just used 2 bungies down to the running board area anytime I needed the windshield down for wheeling.

Anyone else had an issue with a '75 and newer hood on a 74 and older fj40?

Anyone have a picture of the stops on a '65 fj40? I took the two rubber stops out of the package and put them in the holes today...then I tried laying down the windshield but had to put it back up because the wipers would have hit the hood.....??? the Rubber cushions I have arent the "stepped" later kind but the flat kind that look like a chocolate twinky.....

Any ideas at all on this one? The toyota packaging and part # for the stops I used are 53334-60010

65 is the flat rubber cushions. what winshield frame do you have? does it have a vent under the windshield (on the w/s frame itself)? are the wipers mounted on the top or the bottom?

do you have the w/s frame with the wipers on the top, but the pedestal style holders on your hood? if so, see post 21

Mine has the vent at bottom of frame and wipers on top of frame....Just the flat bumpers...not the raised type....I'll take a pic of it....

Wipers on top.
I'm guessing that by pedestal you mean the steel "box" type things and not the big rubber bumpers...then yes, I have the pedestal type that came on a '75 hood I swapped on a long time ago. My 74 hood had the big rubber bumpers. Thanks for pointing to post 21, after reading it twice I noticed the part about the hinges on the 75 windshield moving the windshield further down the hood when put down. My '74 windshield apparently doesn't do that so my hooks have never been able to reach my windshield and are basically useless.

Here it is...Not letting the frame all the way down for obvious reasons....

Wow! Those are really short. My stock '74 hood had ones about twice as tall as that...actually so did my stock '70. Never seen ones that thin.

OK...Since I've highjacked this thread...what is #9 in this picture called....I apparently don't have it I guess....When I got the fj towed home Monday there were slats of wood under the windshield frame....?

B would certainly work with the 2 3/4 spacing but is that what I'm supposed to use? Obviously I should use what works but If the short one is the one to use for a '65 then I'm confused.....?

I think it will comedown to the spacing of the holes on your hood. Another thing to consider is: maybe not the orginal hood. I would give ccot a call or email and ask about the height of the bumper. that would give you the information you need for wiper clearance.

OKay..I'll call CCOT when they wake up today....both the short bumper and bumper b from above have 2 3/4 spacing....

Is the #9 gasket something I can make myself with some black rubber? Or do I need to buy the correct #9 gasket? How high is the gasket? Sorry for all the newb questions.....
