Is my fj62 overheating? You tell me!!!

Mine is about the same as well. When stopped it sits at the 1/2 mark and then when moving it drops back down. I've replaced the rad, thermostat, temp sending unit, water pump, fan clutch, and all hoses. All oem. Its been an expensive process. Just ordered new aftermarket guages though, hopefully the stock guages just suck.

But did you replace the FUEL gauge sender? Yes the FUEL gauge.

Do a search and see.

I also have this theory that if you have a leaking exhaust gasket that that cannot be good for the operating temp of the engine. I mean think about it, there are super hot gases escaping right into the engine compartment making it that much hotter.

I think I have this going on right now on mine. There is a slight leak and although I'm not overheating, the temp gauge(mechanical) does go above 220 at times and EVERYTHING has been replaced new and system burped.

Problem solved!!!

Hey guys, i am just updating this thread with a conclusion. i installed my gauge today with a home made inline sensor hose adapter and my truck is running well and i am at ease now. my fan clutch is fine i believe and my temps are good. while running at about 55 or 70 with max A/C on it runs fine at 175 F. and i let it idle after driving it for a while with A/C on and it was just barely over 200 F. these numbers look good. my stock gauge reads at 2/3 and it shows right under 190 F. these numbers are good, right? :) thanks for all the help and input guys, very helpful and correct with the suggestions. i appreciated it and God Bless - Cody

You should be fine. What temp is your thermostat set at?

For everyone who has been following this thread, please see that stock temp gauges are not accurate, and the PO's temp readings will not equal the same on your stock gauge as they do on his.

When in doubt - get a mechanical unit.

its a 180 F Tstat. my mechanic friend for down here in the south i should get a 160 F one. do they even make one that low for us? but all is well. and i now agree about getting actual numbers with a mech gauge. 21 years wears out the stock one- God Bless - Cody

Cody, glad you are getting this sorted out.

On to the simple stuff...don't listen to your mechanic that tells you to put in a 160 T-stat. Do what Toyota suggest.

Stock OEM 82C.

thats what i said! thanks again fella's , ya'll definitely helped out. God Bless - Cody

Thanks for posting the conclusion. So often folks dont. I have been following this thread since the 2nd post because I have the exact situation you did and the same fears. I just ordered a mechanical gauge now to try to ease my fears!

I know i do have an exhaust leak that i am about to get fixed so HOpefully if that its a problem... it wont be for long.

If you fill your overflow does it stay full? Even after a month or so? Honestly when a vehicle starts to run warmer than before and you have any kind of coolant loss over a period of time the head gasket is usually starting to go. Its not always a catastrophic failure and a lot of the times its very obvious its on its way out before it actually happens. It may run for years leaking slowly but it usually is leaking and that tiny leak will cause increased temperatures. My civic ran for 3 years with the head gasket going. I replaced the every part of the cooling system and each time I replaced something it seemed to solve the problem and honestly probably didn't hurt but in the end the problem would come back as the gain from new parts was offset by the increasingly leaky head gasket. The other thing is when that leaky head gasket gets extra hot it will actually actually let more coolant escape until it cools back down and might seem fine for a while again.

I wouldn't worry about it to much just check your overflow and keep it topped off. Unless it gets really bad I wouldn't bother messing with it.

One thing though that I've noticed with a similar setup (in-line hose adapter for the mech temp sending unit) and that is it's not very accurate if you think about it.

What I mean is the ambient temperature in the engine bay affects this kind of setup. Think about it...the hose sits there with all the extra heat around it causing the temp to go higher(for the mechanical gauge) than what is normal. At least that's what I've noticed.

mine is working great with no spikes or anything of that nature. it is reading accurately. it does ease your fears when you see some good numbers :) God BLess - Cody

i find it amazing how great the oem stock toyota parts are. my fan clutch is original most likely and still works the way it is suppose to, we have owned my truck for 10 years and have only had to change minor things. awesome rigs God Bless - Cody
