Is my fj62 overheating? You tell me!!!

Stock gauges vary so much that I would not use any reference temps besides "red is too hot." anything else is an assumption that is misleading at best and headwarping at worst.

when i install my gauge.....what temp is too staring to get too hot? 215 or something like that
since I've ditched the stock fan & use the Contour e-fans, my rig runs between 190 & 200 w/ AC on @ mid 90 degree air temp.

Where are you guys putting the sensor or sending unit for a second gauge?
Is there any good spot to add or are you abandoning the stock gauge and using that sender location?
Cheers,
Dave
I used the stock sender location. The probe fit fine and I didn't have to use any special fittings.

hey do you guys now how i could disable my air pump and make it spin freely? how do i do that, by removing the bearings? i want to keep the pump in place though. thanks -Cody

You can bypass the pump by using a Dayco Part # 22528 belt. Spook50 has this in his desmog guide. I used it for my desmog, it works great, and avoids the destruction of the pump.

yea i saw the guide but i dont have smog here and doesnt the alternator need he pump in place with that bracket connected to it..............thats why i wanted to keep the pump.

Here's a pic of the bypass belt installed & the removed pump

you can also buy the idler pulley Jim C makes, or you could install a 2 alternator.

Well maybe I should caveat what I said... I know you can do this on the FJ60 with a 2f Engine.

thats pretty cool agent orange, i will probably do that. do you just cap at air housing and the metal pipe? i appreciate the help and pics. God BLess- Cody

also is the alternator getting enough pull minus the air pump part of the belt?

also i burped my coolant system tonight and had zero bubbles with my cap off( isnt that a good sign that my headgasket is still in good shape?) also with my new Tstat, my temp climbs up to 2/3's mark and stays there. it doesnt wait at 1/3 for a while anymore. bad, good, fine? and my mechanical gauge is going in soon! -Cody

did you replace what everyone refers to as the o-ring in the thermostat housing?

typically if your head gasket is defective you will be blowing white smoke out the tailpipe and you will have oil in the coolant or coolant in the oil, and you potentially will be boiling over / over-heating.

as a number of people have noted..you can't trust the OEM temp guage.

yea thats why i am will be getting some fittings to fit my gauge today. thanks Elbert, but now i am off to school. have a blessed day guys- Cody

when i hit the gas and speed off( lol) my truck temp goes down and then after i let off it goes back to right under 2/3's mark. does that sound like definite fan clutch slippage? i replicated this situation a few times- Cody

yes, the Help section in the local auto parts store has them. They are heater hose caps, 3/4" ID I think.

also is the alternator getting enough pull minus the air pump part of the belt?
yes, 14v measured at the back of the alt.

my guages came with some fittings in the package. I didn't need to buy extra ones.

wait until you install the mechanical guage. It's pointless to troubleshoot with the stock guage.
FYI when watching the mech guage:
As the truck warms up, the mechanical guage will slowly climb to the temp that the thermostat is set at, usually 190. When the thermostat opens, the temp will decrease, by as much as 20 degrees, as the cooler coolant that has been sitting in the radiator is now circulated through the engine and the rest of the cooling system. Once the system stabilizes, the temp should level out near the thermostat opening temp, usually a little bit above, ie 195. If you're seeing temps above 220, under normal driving conditions, something's wrong.

Hope this helps Cody,
Rick

thanks Rick! i tried installing my new gauge but the fittings they gave me were to big or to small to fit as the adaptor, so i am going to have the machine shop bring one down a size and hope it fits correctly. yes you are correct about the troubleshooting though. thanks for all your input. will continue to update. God Bless -Cody
