pulled the 5.0 apart and started tearing in to the c6.
The 302 is in EXCELLENT SHAPE!!!! It has never been apart. Still has the stock ford bearings. Nothing scored. I can still see the cross hatching from the original machining. Measured the gap on the rings.. .018 I am going to hone the motor and have the rotating assy balanced. then slap it back together with some 351 heads, a b303 cam and some other toys
I also opened up the c6. It was a free tranny so I had no idea what to expect..
I was stunned. I have NEVER pulled apart anything mechanical that looked so clean. I cannot see anything wrong with this tranny. I'll probably rebuild it any way but hell. I might be tempted to just put it back together and call it good. Are all autos typically this clean?? Or is mine in reasonable shape?
so long as you dont cook them and keep the fluid clean they typically stay clean. atf has alot of detergents in it. at least get a paper/rubber kit and replace all the seals. if the clutches and band friction material look good id run it. take a small screwdriver (pocket type) and make sure all the spool valves in the valve body move freely. some of them will have a pretty stiff spring pushing against them but they should all move. check condition of the bushings and thrust washers,(vaseline works as an assembly lube if used in moderation to hold them in place) inspect real close the condition of the planetary gears and make sure none of them are walking back-and-forth wearing into the assembly. (read as excessive end-play as viewed perpendicular to the gears rotation) if everything looks good then put it back together and run it. most important part is DONT FORCE ANYTHING! c6's are pretty simple as far as autos go so you shouldnt have any trouble. good luck and hope to see you soon.
