New to the forum. I'm set on buying an FJ80 in the next few days. Sold my 04 Dodge 3500 4x4 quadcab dually and called to cancel the insurance and get a quote on an LX450 or Land Cruiser. I about fell off my chair when I got a quote 3x the rate for the same coverages on a vehicle worth less than 1/2. Anyone else have similar experiences?

Mine is higher than my wife's 05 Outback XT LTD. Her's also has collision, mine does not. Book values are probably similar at this point on both vehicles.

I've always assumed the Cruiser has a higher rate due to roll over, the damage it applies to what ever it hits, and the lesser safety rating.

USAA charged $650/6mos on the dually and quoted $1680/6mos apples to apples regarding coverages

Shop around, State Farm charges me ~$500/6mo for full coverage. Most insurance companies classify 80s as luxury vehicles, so they do run on the high side. SF is one of the few that doesn't put a premium on them.

I had a 96 dodge ram 2wd and my 92 cruiser is almost half the price. I just figured because it is over 20yrs old.

Liability was around $600.....was over $1000/6mos for comp/collision. Had a non comp vehicle stolen in the past and don't want to live that again

I have 3 vehicles (05 Jeep Liberty, 97 LC, and 96 Ford f350) and pay $620 for 6 months of full coverage on all with Progressive. That is after multicar discount, being with them for 15+ years, and $120 or so off for paying up front. I have a perfect driving record which helps a lot. I think the LC was $200 of the total.

a lot depends on location - our 80 in Louisiana is more expensive to insure than the LX in Arizona at the same levels of coverage

I pay $240/mo for coverage on the FJ80, 2011 Dodge Journey, 2012 Durango R/T hemi and a 1993 CBR900RR

State Farm, full coverage, $500 deductible

140 a year for liability

I have a 1995 covered with statefarm. I think it's about $50 a month for full coverage. My family had been with State Farm for over 25 years also.

Yes they are. Mine was a huge jump just to go from liability to comp. my agent said everything is expensive to fix on 'em. When since mines not a dd I keep liability, then call to put in under f/c before going on a big trip, they pro-rate it so its pretty cheap

I actually just talked to my agent about this. I have all my insurance with state farm, so my "discount double-check" price for full coverage was $45/month. I just bumped it down to a low mileage rig with liability only and it dropped to $26/month. 1991 FJ80 in TN for reference.

Well I am an insurance agent; and my family owns and runs an insurance agency. I have owned quite a few vehicles and there are a lot of things that go into the price of insurance. First off; Medical liability is darn cheap on fzj80's. This is because for one...people inside the car are rarely injured seriously. Let's put it this way though. a WRX STI has a damage symbol of a 56, a mustang gt 500 has a damage symbol of a 58.....my landcruiser has a damage symbol of a 42.....put it this way. my 1996 toyota corolla is a 16.... each symbol can be considered 1,000 dollars. This number is the AVERAGE total cost of damage the vehicle sustains and does in a "totaled" situation. Also consider this, the rate of accidents and claims in the area your in effects your rate; your credit effects your rate ( at least in WA state) your driving record effects your rate..your driving and claims record effects your rate. To answer the general question; yes this vehicle costs A LOT more than your average 1990's vehicle..but that is because idiots doing massive damage to them/rolling them etc..Now I am not trying to sell anyone on anything...I didn't even mention the kind of agency my family owns. But if anyone is curious about something insurance related I would be glad to answer.

Thanks for the feedback everyone. Not only am I hunting for the right FJ80, but insurance too.

Similar to this gent above. I can tell you that an 80 is half the cost of a 100 for the same term!

I guess I consider myself some what lucky reading others rates. With 21st century, I pay a little more than $600/6mo for my 93 LC and 08 town and country van. That's full coverage, but with no collision on the cruiser. The cruiser is more expensive by comparison, slightly cheaper on some areas.

Mines $47 a month w/ full coverage. I also have my IS on the policy which is 3x that but much newer.

Correction, mine was $500 for both trucks, have my HO attached so I'm getting two discounts.
