Hello Dave,
There is a club meeting next Friday June 20th. It is a great way to meet other members and talk about Landcruisers

Hey guys,

I'm Billy and I now live north of Atlanta. I'm in the hiring process for a job in Phoenix so me and the family might be heading out there soon. Don't know a soul in AZ and have never been there but for a combination of reasons, we think the move will be good for us. We are thinking about living in Gilbert or Chandler and I might need to pick some of your brains about commute times, neighborhoods to avoid, etc...

I have an 89 FJ62 that's bone stock except for the H55 tranny that was put in last year by the guys at Atlanta Custom Creations. ACC is the best LC shop in town and they will be one of the things I miss the most if we make the move. Hope to hear or see some of you guys real soon!

Welcome Billy. Please start a new thread when you know your work location. Someone should be able to help you on commute time. We have member from Atlanta, who is also a happy customer of ACC . Hope to see you soon. Good luck with your job hiring process.

Welcome to town! Ditto what medtro said. Phoenix is a very big, in area, town. If you are in north Phoenix you probably would not like the drive from the east valley. If interested my wife works in a real estate office on the west side of town, one of the realtors there I have had sell several of my houses. In any case more information will help us help you.

Too bad you are picking the absolute worst time of year to relocate here. Kinda like moving to Minneapolis in January, just in reverse.

Thanks for all the replies and information. I really appreciate it.

My potential job location is at the Maricopa County Justice Center on W. Jackson St. in Phoenix. I know that's a real long commute from Gilbert or Chandler, but the folks I may be working for have told me most of them park their cars at the park and rides in Gilbert and Chandler and take the express bus into town. Maricopa County gives free bus passes to their employees. That would definitely save wear and tear on my truck as well as some money. The bus system in Atlanta is horrible, and I would not use it unless it was an absolute emergency. I'm curious about you what you guys think about the buses and trains out there. 12 miles to the gallon from my 3FE does not equal a happy bank account.

Before the wife and I got our Rugrat, we would go to Vegas two or three times a year including Multiple trips during the summer months. There's a big difference between visiting someplace hot and living there, but your climate is one of the reasons we want to move to Arizona. My wife is an Ohio girl, and frankly we are both sick of tornadoes, snow, ice, and then crazy hot weather and humidity in the summer.

My wife has college friends that live in Phoenix and they love it so we are hoping for the best.

Sounds like you are talking about the rail system and not the bus? I would not be afraid of either but the rail would be a much faster. Either way as you know Phoenix is a big city and demographics can change quickly, within 1/4 mile you can go from million dollar area to an area you would not go unless you needed some meth. I would strongly suggest renting in an area approved by your local friends first prior. It a great city with a lot to offer you just need to find the area that fits your lifestyle, needs, and budget.

Welcome

If you are working down town why would you want to live in Gilbert or Chandler? That doesn't make any sense at all. We have the light rail, but unless you live near the pick up and drop off locations its not practical to use. The only housing near the stops are mainly apartments. The light rail isn't anywhere near Gilbert or Chandler at all. As far as avoiding neighborhoods what does that even mean? Overall I think you will like Phoenix it is very diverse and rich with south west history and local eateries. If you like Mexican food you will pretty much be in heaven. if you are working down town at the Jail. I would live down town there are some great areas in central Phoenix. I would live somewhere off the I-10 if you want to live farther out. It gives you quick access to the state in general. Our freeways are awesome compared to most states.

Long tiring hot drive from that side of town. I would not want to do it for an extended period of time. That is assuming of course you will commute during rush hour. An area that is a bit closer would be Ahwatukee (Phoenix) and you may want to check out the area around 44th street and Camelback (Arcadia district, older homes but pricey) the area up around Moon Valley and then again much further out but closer than Gilbert or Chandler, Arrowhead Ranch in Glendale or even Palm Valley in Goodyear.

Working downtown is tough, if you like the urban environment then Chuy is right, there are a lot of opportunities closer in but you will need to search for them. I also agree that you should rent a place first and get to know the town before making a decision. Finally, if you are looking to buy wait until mid November through the holidays. You will be able so save a few dollars as there are typically more homes on the market and fewer buyers...

I can tell you I used to live in Anthem and had to commute everyday while I was going to Arizona State and hat was a brutal drive to make daily. I relocated to Northern Phoenix and the drive was much more manageable. I can't imagine driving from Chandler or Gilbert to downtown Phoenix every single day but this is Arizona and people make weird commutes like that daily so whatever makes you happy bro!

Thanks again for the info. I'm actually sitting in the Atlanta airport right now waiting for my plane to leave - the wife surprised me with a last minute trip to Phoenix to do some scouting. I'm hooking up with a real estate agent and he's going to show me some rental homes and I'm going to try and get the lay of the land in the metro area.

As far as the commute goes, I've got a LONG one in Atlanta and it actually doesn't bother me too much. I would prefer to live somewhere close to the office but it's more important to be in a safe, quiet area for our 3 year old. A lot of the folks in my (potential) office live in Chandler or Gilbert, drive to the park and ride, and take the express bus downtown. Seems like a decent option to me but I'll have to wait and see.

I work downtown and live nearby (near Encanto golfcourse/park). I like the area, older homes with charm (and no HOA ;))... also close to everything. I like the fact i can ride a bike to work, or bus, or rail, or drive the cruiser 3 miles.

That being said; its not quiet and as landcruiserphil says you can go from fairly nice neighborhood (mine) to section 8 crackhood in a heartbeat. Thats phoenix though, a true big city and a melting pot.

If you really want quiet, you need to be an 1 hour or more away from downtown. Not worth the commute to me.

Weekend escapes are the bees knees here. Less than a few hours in any direction and you are in a number of beautiful and unique playgrounds.

Good luck.

Hey fellas

I am a new fzj80 owner here in Mesa
I recently sold my 99 t4r to get something a little more capable. It is going to be my daily driver for a little while as well, luckily I do not have to drive much.

I looked around for about 2 months for a nice cruiser before I pulled the trigger on Robert's(bowtiestang, see link)
https://forum.ih8mud.com/threads/1997-lx450-lifted-and-locked-tucson-az.810673/

I am an Army veteran and I am currently finishing up at ASU. I have been working on cars for 12 years and pretty much do all my own mechanical work and fabricating. I am looking forward to meeting up seeing what this thing can do, although I am confident it is much more capable than I am lol.

I will most likely start a separate build thread for it here in the next couple days. I am telling myself that I will leave it alone for awhile but I am all too familiar with how that goes.

Anyways take it easy guys and I look forward to seeing you around.

welcome

 Congrats
what mods do you have in mindt?

Thanks.

In the near future:
35s
Arb front bumper or I might tackle building one myself.
Sliders.

And I am going to try and figure out some portable storage for the rear in lieu of the back seats.

My girlfriend and I are taking it up to strawberry in 2 weeks for some camping and fun.

Welcome, hope to see you at one of the functions!
