Searched, didn’t find an immediate answer to this one. LC is a ‘98 without nav, so basic HVAC controls.

In the recent cold, I’ve had a couple of times when heat starts strong and then drops to lukewarm on my drive. If I bump it to max, it comes on hot, but that’s the only way I get heat. Can’t figure out if this is a thermostat or something else - thoughts?

I always say check your coolant level, so do. But "Bumping it to max", point elsewhere.

But your issues, if using AUTO HVAC. "Bumping it to max" , means dialing temp to HOT. Then, likely the HVAC sensor, behind vent 6" below key IG SW, is issue.

Sometime when dash worked on, hose becomes detached. Or sensor may be very dirty.

Oh man, I would have never thought to look there - thanks for this.

I just dealt with weird coolant level issues on our 2020 Outback, so this was my first thought as well. The symptoms don’t quite add up to low coolant, but I’ll be sure to top off this weekend to rule it out. The intermittent part to me points to either a strange sensor issue, or air in the coolant system somewhere.
