Intermittent Fuel and Temp Gauges - Question

I have a 78 FJ40 and the fuel and temp gauges work intermittently. They always both work at the same time or both not work at the same time.

I noticed the last two times I got gas, the gauges did not work until about 1/8 to 1/4 of tank of gas was used.

Any suggestions?

I don't know if the 40's are wired the same as the wagons, but those gauges in the FJ62 cluster were fed thru a tiny voltage regulator inside the cluster. They would sometimes go wonky, and the fix was to clean the contacts in the regulator.
