I went for full on mine (I am 33) and they want 950 (cheapest is state farm). That is a six month rate.

I am sticking with liability for the moment untill I finish arguing my credit report with equifax......

You know they give better rates the better your credit is.... They assume if you have good credit you are less likely to get in a wreck.,.... personally sounds something like ," if I wear the right fragrance tonight I will go home with my dream redhead" to me. Quite unfair of them... but then again the irs is against the constituion... neverming getting me started......

Anyhow ... if your credit sucks go to equifax.com sign up and dispute whatever you dont owe or have paid, get your credit right... get good credit... then go for a new insurance quote.

IMHO (in my humble opinion)

I h8 insurance companies. Expessially the ones that check your credit. imo thats bs. credit should have nothing to do with your driving record. just because you have good credit doesent mean your a safer or better driver than someone with little/no/ or bad credit.
A agree though...I dont know what it is about Landcruisers, but thier so darn expensive to insure. I dont think it entirly goes by age. im 27, 24 when i bought my cruiser. I have 3 cars insured+ house through allstate. I have a 2003 4x4 tacoma @ $450 per 6 months full coverage, the S2000 (sports car) is $650 per 6 months full coverage, and the 1996 landcruiser, driven min. miles per year for pleasure was $750 per 6 months full coverage., Why so much more than the brand new sports car? they didn't know either. so i paid it off and dropped full coverage and it went down to $250 per 6 months. this is with a 1K deductable across the board in phoenix.

I had a friend that was in the same situation back inthe 80s. He went out & bought a $250 beater car and insured it liability only as his primary ride and made his 2 year old Nissan and occasional vehicle. That dropped his insurance considerably. His accident was more than a fenderbender though. He knocked the rear axle clean out from under a mid 70s chevy pickup with his V65 Sabre (drunk).

Brandon, I feel your pain, I pay 730 every 6 months for liability and medical. No collision or comprehensive. :frown:

I dropped collision and comprehensive after the 80 got totaled though (my brother was in the accident and he wasn't at fault), then after we got the $9k check, I rebuilt the 80 for $2k and have been driving it since. :D

I guess now might be a bad time to point out I pay $250 for the highest limits money can buy with low deductibles? (And SC has high rates;)

:flipoff2:

Insurance companies are vital to traffic safety - otherwise, road rules would be defined by the guy with the biggest rig and most amount of weaponry.

From a technical standpoint, insurance underwriters and actuaries know that good credit risks are also the best insurance risks, it has to do with responsibility.

Everybody can have a bad patch in life, but paying debts says a lot about character and I guess they reckon the better the character, the better the driver.

Dear Project,

I hate to be a buzzkill, but you are wrong as rain about better credit lower claims. Since this is what I do for a living (sell auto insurance) I can tell you tht every insurance company who is in it for the long haul does this (check credit). The credit score is a more accurate predictor than all other methods combined, so it isn't going away.

Dear Cruiser,

The biggest reason you are paying high rates is 1.your age 2. single male 3. driving record / credit 4. at fault accidents.

I'll give you some free advice. Drop comp and collision. Keep liability and uninsured / underinsured motorist and either PIP or med pay.

If you total the truck (and it's your fault) get a loan from daddy, or his banker to replace or rebuild. Keep the old truck around for salvage out if you replace. If you get totled, collect on the other guy's insurance without yours getting involved if you can pull it off.
This will save you on future rates. Even not at fault accidents count against you regardless of what anyone else tells you.

Good luck!

Dan

Stay on Daddy's policy if at all possible, and if you aren't already. Your next price break is at 21, then 25, sooner if you get married.
Note: Getting married to save on car insurance is a bad idea.

Yea this thread is over a year old now, rates have gotten better and dropping collision helped alot.

At 12 years old and nearly 300k miles having collision on the 80 was pretty much pointless, plus i've gotten to the point on the truck where it's fairly protected with the bumpers and whatnot.

Also, i was putting about 400 miles a week on the 80 and gas was killing me, bought a cheap honda and I drive it alot which keeps the 80 parked 5 days out of the week.

This insurance thing makes me crazy also. Im 40, married with kids, decent credit, no accidents or tickets. We have full coverage on three cars. Only car financed is the newest one.

my new 2006 sports car costs $ 770 per year to insure
my wifes 1999 Lexus costs $900
my 1997 Landcruiser costs $1300

can anyone explain?

I have two old vehicles that I only carry liability/uninsured motorist coverage on...'97 LX-450 and '98 Sienna. The semi-annual premiums are within $10 of one another.

The delta you guys see must be in collision/comprehensive? Can 80s be that much more expensive to fix?

When I was talking with the insurance people they state that the cost to fix my 95 is nearly the same as a 2000-2002 LC. Hence the high premiums. Parts are harder to come by also.
