I'm looking for some tips on what to look for when shopping for a used Warn 8274. Problem is most of them that I come across aren't mounted or wired up, so I can't check their functioning. I know of a couple that are listed at an upcoming auction, but trudging a battery in with a pair of jumper cables isn't even an option.

Are there any specific issues I need to watch for that can be checked without 12v of juice available?

If you can't put a battery on it, there is a lot you are not going to know about it. You can pull the free spool knob and see if if plays out.

Good point! If it were me, the price better reflect the risk you are taking not being able to check it out. Otherwise the only way I'm bringing it home is if the "seller" donates it. :D

Might want to bring a battery along. That wouldn't be fun but at least you can check the winches.

If you can't see the winch fully functional then your bid should reflect what you would pay for a non-functioning winch. If it functions then great! If it doesn't, then you should have the $ budgeted to fix it.
