Inside that pesky Washer Diverter Valve

Ever wonder why that little diverter valve (part No. 85321-60050) fails? Well inside it has a magnet and a ferrous plate with a gasket on one side. The metal plate rusts to the point that it swells and doesn't make a seal anymore. For about $40, a 12mm wrench and about 5 minutes of your time you can replace this notorious little s.o.b and be able to see out your windshield again. Symptoms that your valve has failed included a dribble of fluid out your front or rear jets when you push either washer button, or sometimes no fluid at all.

It would be interesting to see if cleaning up the rust would allow it to operate normally.

Welcome, and good first post. Looks like we have a new member who at leasts asks the question of why when things go wrong and is willing to take things apart. You will do well here.

Reminder to self, use washer fluid and distilled water, not tap in the washer reservoir...perhaps that will help the little bugger last a few years longer (replaced mine in the last year).

Nice job.

I didn't pull mine apart quite so far, but it was rusty too.

How does one take it apart

With pliers etc - see the picture... it is a somewhat destructive process...

The rust causes the rubber membrane to peel off so the valve can no longer seal. Basically it would take more time/effort to repair versus just buying a replacement that will be good for another 5 - 10 years.

Essentially a poor design/implementation that will fail again and again...

cheers,
george.

I am pretty sure that the diverter valve can be replaced with a 2nd reservoir and pump with the removal of a single diode behind the dashboard.

But i have not wanted to have my dash opened up again recently.

That's how the JDM ones are set up. No simple way to do this fix. Simplest way to fix it is to toss in a new diverter valve and deal with it again in 10 years...

It might be simple, for limited powers of "simple".

should be easy enough to power another washer pump off the harness for the diverter.

Then all you need to do is lose the diode that fires up the main pump in unison with the diverter when you try to wash the back window.

But seeing it on the wiring diagram and knowing where it is behind the dash are two different things.

Does the 92 fj80 have that? I called toyota and they say they don't have it. My fluid isn't coming out from the nozzle, i hear the motor going. I've used a pin to poke the nozzle already still nothing.

Hey Timpanogos, would you be able to point me in the right direction for finding this diode! it looks like mine may have failed. Thanks!

This reminds me that mine failed earlier this year. I think I had purchased a new one many moons ago. Will need to go through my stash of parts.

Nah. somewhere behind the dash. I never ended up looking for it.

It appears to be under the dash by your right knee

Diode found, actually easy access and I found out after tearing dash apart🤦‍♂️

You only need to remove the lower panel above your legs driver side.

So, with diode removed, rear wash mode does not activate the front wash. The plug for the diverter, 2 wires, one is +12 and the other goes to ground when the rear wash mode is selected.

You can get a washer bottle complete set-up on Amazon for $25 and there is room for it on the drivers side where the diverted was located.

Ok. Finally got round to checking out the diodes. Both good! So now I'm wondering if there's different combination switches for the different years? When I try to activate the front pump by pulling the stalk back towards me there is no pump at all. Hmmmm. Thoughts?
