I just finished up fixing a minor rust spot on the rear inner wheel arch. To get the area clean enough for welding I had to scrape off a putty like substance which appears to be spayed over the entire wheel arch. The stuff is a beige colour and is on thick - like 2 or 3mm thick. Can someone help me understand what it is called, is there a Toyota P/N or an aftermarket alternative.

Thanks in advance.

Most likely Seam Sealer.

Then prime and paint over it, then whatever undercoating over that.

IDK Toyota numbers. 3M makes good seam sealers.

Thanks dude. Its not unlike a seam sealer but obviously covers way more than just the seams. If all else failes, have a brushable seam sealer which i can use to bring the repair flush with the surrounding area.

Check out the Collision Repair Manual in the Resources section.

I don't know where your area is, but it's covered in the manual. Toyota doesn't specify a particular sealant or undercoating, but the dealer body shop will know what to use.

Thanks guys. I will fill the patch out with some brush on seam sealer and call it a day 🙂

Thanks @Kernal . The first one looks promising. Please share any info you gleen from the toyota body shop 🙂

I was wondering the same after fixing up the rust on my front fender. There is a ridge along the lip in places where there was some sort of build up of material.

I was just about to this same job but haven't yet decided which product to use
but I do have a local Toyota (Dealer) Body Shop so plan to run it by them.

Heres a couple options I've considered so far, they may not be exactly the same product (I'll post up what I learn from my Dealer Body Shop FWIW).

I used this NAPA product to mimic the factory rock guard coating. I think it is about as close as you will get. The stuff I originally used had a texture that was too rough.

This is it applied over the rougher texture stuff.

I've been looking for the stuff they spray in the fender wells also as well as what us under the rockerpanel paint. May end up just using an epoxy based bedliner but would like to know what was done from factory too

Didn't hear back from the Toyota dealer body shop today so will check again Monday.

Here's a link to an Epoxy primer I plan to spray on my wheel wells (to cover any bare spots, cracks, etc) before the anti-chip coating. FWIW
