does anyone know if there is a difference in spline count on the inners (the side that goes into the carrier/differential) from earlier models to late models. I have a friend who is putting the third memberes from my 84 fj60 into hid 68 fj40. I know the 3rd's will fit, but will the stock axles fit the carrier/diff ? anyone know? thanks -VETTE

Hi All:

Yes, the 1969 and newer TLC third members have 30 spline side gears, while the 1968 and older rigs have ten spline side gears in the center section.

Your buddy will need to upgrade to the later fine-spline axle shafts. This is also a great opportunity for him/her to upgrade to disc brakes in the front as well.

Regards,

Alan

FAQ says the axles from 68 onward are fine spline. Specter thinks so too. Your buddy should be able to pull out a rear axle and tell in about 10 minutes.

I've got several of the fine spline side gears for the diff if they will do you any good. I don't know if they will fit your carrier but if they do your welcome to them.

The axle may have had 8mm studs that hold in the third member and inspection cover. All the 30
spline axles used 10mm studs. I had a 68 FJ55 that had the 8mm studs on the front with the ball and
claw joint but had a 30 spline rear end. I knew the original owner. He'd never had the axles apart.
I think it was a out with the old and in with the new year at Toyota so a few trucks got a hodge podge
