So I’ve learned that maybe the 3spd for the 73’ fj40 may not have had an inner boot for the transfer case. Curious if anyone has discovered an alternative lately. I see there’s some autozone type pieces that would need to be switched out yearly. Maybe there’s a more permanent piece someone has come across for the transfer case?

Around the 90's I took a piece of water proof tent floor canvas (used) and sewed it into a cone shape after folding over the top and putting in some paracord to tie it shut. Drilled out the pop rivets in that metal formed bands, removed the rotten failing rubber (like yours) placed my fabric cone in between the bands - adjusted the fit - poke holes for the new pop rivets and then for the mounting screws. Still works.

Nice. Was thinking about using some surplus military tent fabric for the outer one but wanted to see if there were any current aftermarket inner boots being used as well.

You think the waterproof fabric is helping to keep fumes outa the cab?

Yes. Its tied shut at the top and screwed down at the bottom. Is it 100% air tight, likely not but neither is the LandCruiser. Windows leak air, so do the door seals. There were no parts back then, all NLA. Yea I was able to get the defroster ducts back then but the end fittings have dry rotted apart. Hose appears still good. I cut a plastic water bottle and formed the 90 fitting with duct tape. However I now have 2" PVC 90's to fit it up better than the modified water bottle.

Very cool. I’ll go the diy route

the boot you have currently is not correct for a 73, looks like an early 60 series boot

find anything that will work for you

when I was just out of high school, I used denim jean pant legs and a hose clamp around the rod to keep the top sealed and used the existing ring to seal the bottom

I think it's either a mini truck boot or off a 70 series.

Left side of this picture has a couple of combination transmission transfer case boots from 70 series.

Here is one of those boots with the transmission boot in a late 40 series inspection cover.

Could use an original transfer case boots and heavy piece rubber sandwiched between the boot and tunnel cover with an L pattern cut to match the shift pattern.
