Hi Guys

I am trying to get some information on my LC80, I've had it about a year now, in that time I've swapped out to Iron Man shocks, springs and general maintenance, body mounts etc
the car has been great, I live in Laos, and we only have dirt roads round where I live, in the summer the roads are fine, just dusty but when rainy season comes the roads become horrendous.
I haven't got stuck once since owning the car, but last week I was almost stuck!! So got me thinking about front and rear diff locks etc.
So I have been doing research on the forum on what is the best to do. The problem I have is that all the posts seem to start with the LC80 been 4wd all the time, the problem is my LC80 is 2wd, and I can select 4wd, also I have manual front hub lockers which I understand how they work, I don't have any other lock buttons in the car, when I select 4wd the diff lock light comes on. So I'm just wondering if someone can shed some light on my LC80 and why it seems different to all the others I read about, and what options for diff locks I have, I read about a button I can buy and install as the plug is there apparently although i haven't checked if my LC80 has it

Any information and explanation on my current setup would be great
Thank you guys

You have a part-time 4x4 80 Series. You don't have/need a centre diff lock setup or button.
On the full-time 4x4 trucks, the centre diff lock is equivalent to you shifting from 2H to 4H.

You can fit front and rear lockers as per any other 80 series.

Odd that it lights up like that. I think some part time models have a green "4WD" light.

When you shift to 4HI or 4LO the transfer case connects/locks drive to the front driveshaft so you have equal drive to both front and rear drive shafts.

As above, your options for aftermarket lockers are the same as for any other 80

An easy and less expensive way to make your vehicle a bit more 'capable' would be to install an automatic 'locker' in the rear diff (such as an Aussie Locker or like model). You can search the forum for info and installation procedures.

My Nephew just moved from Laos....having been there for 3 yrs (Special Agent). He would concur....the roads in the rainy season can be a mess.

I'm curious what engine you have, and what year is the 80? For a rear locking differential installation you need to determine if it's a full float axle or not.

Its the 1hz engine and chassis come back as 1997 , the body i am not sure if its the original one for the chassis as these cars are often messed about with over here, how do i determine if its full float ?

Post a pic looking side-on at one of the rear wheels. We'll tell you pretty quickly.

That's a full floater

Thanks for that , im not sure if thats good or not lol (ill do some searching now that i know about it) , its all new to me. What option for a locker would you recommend
It's good! If you break an axle shaft you're not in danger of loosing a wheel, 2x wheel bearings a side, much easier axle/bearing service etc. On lockers, I've had many years of reliable service with ARB air lockers, but I may give a Harrop/Eaton E-Locker a go next time if I didn't have on-board air already.

I have the ARB air locker...I've been very happy with it, but that said, you need a compressor too, which complicates installation and increases the overall cost.

For my front, which is unlocked, I've been eyeing the Eaton, which is available for front and rear, and is electrically activated. This means just some wiring to install (beyond the actual locker in the gears), rather than the compressor too with an air line and electrical connections needed for the ARB.

I'm sure that others will add their thoughts based on personal experience.

Update: just re-read your first post...I'd go with a rear locker first and see how it does for you...most likely don't need front and rear and can save a bit of $$. Since the installation is obviously a whole separate project for front and rear, I doubt that you'd get any deals on installation (if you need to have someone do it for you).
