Edit: It took me a while to write that last post.

Landtank: Thanks for your input. Those are definitely things to consider.

Maybe I should just put around in the old NA 1FZ-FE until I could either do a turbo or maybe swap the engine out for something else.

This is one heck of a tough decision.

Nicholas...as a man who owned a 350 powered FJ60, and rebuilds motors on a regular....it very VERY VERY nice to deal with factory-like installed things. It's no fun when you're on a trip with your Edelbrock Fuel Injected truck that has a serious ignition problem and it's Labor Day Weekend and you cannot get parts or people to help you!

Motor swaps are cool, but only if you have a garage where you live and lots of time initially. IMO the 1FZ is a darn good motor (2F, and 3FEs BLOW) so stop that crazy talk about dropping in a new motor....you know though that is a big engine compartment:hhmm:.

Nicholas,

I know exactly what you are talking about, except that I am not married.

I was contemplating getting the SC, and I finally placed my order on Tuesday, yeahhh.

Through my process of convincing myself that I needed one of these :hhmm:, I asked my friends (just like you), what they thought about it.

My friend that helps me do work on my cruiser (therefore, very important opinion), said to me: I can’t tell you to buy it because it is not my money, but I will tell you that If you buy it you’ll be hurting for while, and eventually the pain will go away. However, if you don’t buy, you will be hurting and suffering for the rest of your life and wondering what if…, will it have made a difference or not, loosing sleep, etc. :D :D

Very wise thought from a good friend. I don’t want to suffer for to long, so I bought it. I know that in reality all he wants is free steaks and beers.

Anyhow, in a more serious tone, I have read about people not getting it when they had the chance, and how much they regret it, and now that we have the opportunity, I’d say go for it and stop the pain !!!

F-it Nicholas...buy the thing brother...I have no business buying mine either. I too have student loans that take a big chunk out of my monthly income! Hell every 7.11 months I could buy another S/C with how much I pay every month for them!

When I saw the S/C thread I already knew I wanted one and didn't even pick up my LX-450 yet. What I did know is that I was going to buy the SC regardless of whether or not I had the "right" truck yet.

For me it all came together, sold my '87 at a great price to a super nice guy who will get some great use out of it, found the LX-450 here on on Mud, and picked it up and now who knows maybe my SC is on its way to me now?

I say get it!!! But that's something you need to think about hard prior to taking the plunge. Be smart! But it would really suck to miss the boat on these things. Who knows though, maybe it will take awhile for them to sell out??

Dang, I wish I was. I appreciate the offer. Is there anyone in the midwest that has a TRD S/C that is willing to let me take a test drive?

Gonna be awhile before I get mine installed but you're welcome to take it for a spin once I'm done. Check in with me in a month or two. I'd like to have it done by end of September but you never know...

Pulleys??

Does anyone know if there are different pulleys available for higher boost levels???

I didn't mean to turn this into a Turbo/SC debate or promote anything that I may be working on.

Nobody should assume anything that I might be working on is going to work well or at all. These kits are in limited production as far as I know and if you are on the fence you need to decide how disappointed you will be if you don't get one and they are all gone and there is never another forced induction option available.

As I stated, these SCs are just not for me.

There have been smaller pulleys made. The problem is they will require better fuel and heat management than what is already on the truck.

What really needs to happen is that somebody needs to put a Liquid/air intercooler kit together for this system and that would really take this kit to where it should be from the start. But that would probably add more than a $1000.00 to the cost and since everyone loves cheap power it really isn't going to happen.

That would be sweet...hell you could get a WRX STI intercooler water sprayer too well we're at it huh!!!

After reading Larsen's intercooler set-up I know what will be the next project after the supercharger has been installed!

Geez $150 for a decent sized air-to-air intercooler? How could you say no to that?

Alright SBFJ60FIG,

I'm going to do some thinking, investigating into the old finances, maybe a little money laundering of sorts (legal of course), sweet talking to the :princess:, and definitely sleep on it. This is exciting but a little nerve racking at the same time. Well I see it this way, if the :princess:got a $10K engagement ring, why can't I get a 3K S/C? Who knows it looks like I might be on the new S/C bandwagon soon.

turbocruiser - I agree that Turbo is probably better. I wish I have one. :)
Do you know how easy or how hard it is to install turbo? Do you have to do any modification on exhaust system? Can you finish everything in a couple of days? Do you need any special tools?

Ting, my friend, my apologies, I was actively deleting my posts from this thread when I saw your question. I inadvertently took this to the age old argument of "supercharger vs. turbocharger" and that was NOT what this whole thread was trying to capture. I'm very happy to answer these questions perhaps in another more appropriate thread or through PM's. Let me just clean my mess here a minute more and I'll be back. For the rest of the fine folks here, sorry for the detour there; it is easy to go from "Turbo Pride" to sounding too negative on superchargers which these should not suffer from. The TRD SC's do awesome things for the 80's and I'd be honored to have one on any of my rigs. Again, please pardon the "Turbo Pride" here on my part it wasn't intended as a dis towards these SC's.

Class act.

Thanks for keeping this thread focused on the SC and the availability and the optimization.

X2 - I was about to get out of my chair, and you know what that means:D

Do you have any idea what goes into installing and air to air intercooler on our trucks?

I believe I do my friend...and it does not look that bad to me. What it is for sure...is possible.

And possible, and viable without a crazy amount of effort and fabrication. Looks like a lot of time and patience to get it done and done well.

I thought this picture would do justice to the thread....

Uh....this is at the shop today....

I am running a Vortech V1 supercharger on ROOBY, and we have fitted aftermarket computer, to help with the timing issues the standard set up has with only base timing adjustment, and we are running 10 psi boost, a new Bosch 0404 fuel pump, rising rate fuel pressure reg for boost, and yesterday on the 2wd dyno [yes we removed the front shaft] on 37" tyres, we saw 178kw [aprox 240hp] and around 6000Tn [ 450 ft lb ] @ the rear wheels, which is about the same torque my turbo 80 of the same year, but was manual, vs the current one which is auto, made but we are missing 41 kw, which is about what the V1 would "steal" from the engine to run that boost as a minimum.

We have had some issues with knock sensors, which keep dying, [they ont like heat, and the rear unit in the block seems to get cooked with this set up ATM] hence going aftermarket computer, which has made a MASSIVE difference with being ale to run HEAPS of timing down low, and pull it out up high to sdtop detonation. I would not consider a supercharger, without running the aftermarket computer, on a $ per HP cause, because the gain just wouldnt be big enough, in my opinion, I would rather spend more, and do the turbo to get $ per hp figures more worth while.

The supercharger was a 2nd hand kit I managed to pick up for ROOBY, which saved me many $ over turbo kit, that we were going to do, so i grabbed it, to play with.

Just my findings so far, having owned both a turbo intercooled 4.5 80 95 model, and a supercharged one.

well it's a hell of a lot more effort than what I would want to do, and 150.00 isn't going to get it done. If you get it done definitely post it up.
