What is the canning stock? I know it’s a difficult trail in Australia, but what makes it famously hard for vehicles to tackle?

It's extremely remote, isolated, uninhabited desert with rugged terrain, hot harsh climate, and a looooooong drive from anywhere.

It was an overland stock route used to drove cattle from cattle stations in the Kimberly Ranges (extremely rugged) in northern WA to market in Western Australia gold fields.

It took years for Canning to find a route linking enough desert water sources to make it possible. A lot of wells and bores were out in to access water for cattle.

That's 1200 miles, through desert, no supplies, no assistance. You're on your own.

I think it's length (almost 1,200 miles) and remoteness are the major factors. That much harsh terrain really punishes vehicles. There is also basically no escape routes is you have a vehicle failure.

Apparently Mercedes attempted it recently in G Wagens and failed. Parts for repair had to be dropped from aircraft because they were so remote they were beyond the range of most civilian helicopters.

The thumbnail looks a little weird, but the video is real. The axles also have been reported to be pretty big and strong
I’ll have to rewatch. I hopped around in the video and only saw Jeeps on an assembly line and then figured I was bamboozled after looking at the thumbnail closer

It's distinctly 3 parts, IG first, then Jeep EV 2nd, and Defender last.

The first part is Grenadier, middle is jeeps, end is old defender

Rear axle?

This is the clip that's a bit misleading. It's really just showing the axle manufacturer's line. When I saw this, it made me go Wow! Upon closer inspection, this must be for industrial equipment with full hydro steering.

I think the amount of corrugations punish the vehicles. The G-wagons air suspensions failed. Since the IG has a traditional suspension, that part should fair better. But it would verify every torque setting on the truck.

It’s fine not to do the route. Just announce why you didn’t. Lack of time/money/permits/whatever is understandable.

My dads toughest time in Afghanistan when it came to the reliability of his vehicles was the constant rattling and shaking of his trucks from never being on a properly maintained road. Tougher than any single rock or boulder or mud hole or anything. The rattling of a rough trail over a long time can destroy it so fast. Only the 80 series and Nissan Patrol made him feel like the trucks would last in any capacity. Is that what the canning stock does?

It was to the point that until I was 8, I would move my hot wheels up and down, mimicking the bumping and rattling of the roads, because that’s the type of roads I was used to

Interesting thread. I was totally unaware of this vehicle's development. The video shot by Scot Brady of Overland Journal was great. I love that choice of powertrain, great engine. I'd drive it.

It’s such an under the radar car but it’s so cool
