Now that the 1998 105 series Land Cruisers (specifically LHD FZJ100s) are 25 years old, is anyone importing them to the USA?

Another question is: Did they even make left-hand drive 105 series?

So, there are other benefits say to an 80-series. PP fairly common in both cloth and vinyl. Solid cargo windows, barn doors, even jump seats.

105’s run the bigger sector shaft in the steering box. They run 100-series five lug wheels but FF rear and obviously the sfa. Front and rear hubs have bigger studs and dowels vs an 80. The are basically the same as current production 70-series. Front brakes are larger than 80. Rear shafts are finer spline and larger diameter than 80. Came without ABS. Suspension is the same as an 80 F&R. 4.3 is a common diff gear in 105’s, they did come with diff locks.

HZJ105’s run the obvious 1HZ diesel which is not factory turboed. Transmission is a lighter duty r151.

FZJ’s run an H151 transmission which is much more heavy duty. 1FZ’s in 105’s are coil pack with a different intake, head and few other parts.

Both came in part time 4wd.

Cheers

If anyone figures out how to make one of them California legal I'd love to hear about the process.

@SNLC

You seem to know a lot about Cruisers! And it looks like you were in the import business for a time? What are your thoughts on finding/importing a LHD 105 under the 25-year rule?

Yes and yes.

Be tough to find one worthy that is 25yrs old, in LHD. I have seen some available in both HZJ and FZJ but they are few and far between. I don’t actively search for Cruisers these days either. Last FZJ I saw for sale was out of Argentina but I never saw pics.

I have come across a number of them that were ex-Nato fully kitted out by Toyota Gibraltar. LHD HZJ105’s. All the goodies, even a roll cage fitted in Gibraltar. Good price too, sadly far to new to import being 2005’s.

Middle east will be the best bet for LHD FZJ.

I have had a 100-series, drove it to Panama and back actually. I strongly dislike the torsion bar front suspension. A 105 however is top three or so Cruiser I would like to own.

Cheers

@SNLC Awesome info! I agree that the 105 is the best of both worlds. The pickings are definitely going to be slim at the moment since there's only one viable model year, but its good to know that the vehicles are out there, and more options will open up every year! Only 7 years to go till the 2005's are legal for import 🤣

Be aware it is month of manufacture that makes it 25yrs old not just the year.

I think it is worth pursuing though and 105’s are an excellent platform.

Plenty down here in Central America. I currently have a 2001 105 LHD 4.2 1HZ Manual R151 transmission with barn doors and factory sub tank. Love it. There's always a few that pop up on Facebook marketplace here in Honduras around $14K. Almost bought a second one.....

I've kind of fallen in love with the 105; just bought a SEP 2003. If I ever see anything older than that I will be sorely tempted to snag it.

Shouldn't be a problem if it's a 1FZ engine and 25 years old (or older).

Certainly not a direct answer to the question, but I wonder why Toyota only offered the 105 with the 1HZ or 1FZ? Both are arguably underpowered and barely (or totally not) adequate for highway travel. Seems like the 1HD or 2UZ would have been better options. Especially 1HD since it was offered in the 80 series and would have fit in the 105 without issue.

Of course this line of thinking opens the rabbit hole of "are we in the US better off SAS'ing a 100 than importing a 105...?"
