I don't see how this belongs in "tech", but that's where the welcome message from the admin said to put this. (Sometimes I read instructions.)

I just joined the FZJ80 fraternity today. It's a '95 with lots of road miles. 230k+ Stock height, street tires, still has the running boards and fender flares. I *had* to buy it! I found (OK, credit to my brother who found it) a Land Cruiser with lockers under $4000. I took it to a shop before buying it, and the mechanic found plenty to fix, but said he'd buy it at the seller's asking price. Good enough for me.

The mechanic that checked it out was Troy, from Superior 4WD, that I found in this post. https://forum.ih8mud.com/threads/cruiser-mechanics-listed-by-state.349535/ He was the first person who answered the phone when I was trying to get a pre-purchase inspection done on short notice.

I'm a noobie too!! Had my 93 FZJ80R for 3 weeks after 5 years of dreaming. still getting some work done on her, waiting patiently (19 days and counting down) before she will be legally ready and safe to drive. But she is a beauty and I am so excited. Also very happy to be spending the money for the work needed considering the great price I paid for her.
Yesterday I changed over one and a half of the rear sway bar links myself - one of the old nuts was just too hard for me to loosen...need another day of patience and an extender bar for my shifter to finish the job. Also have begun the process of installing LED lights all around. Many more plans for her, lots of fun times ahead.
Happy to have found this forum. Also, I am in Australia so my baby is a FZJ80R - the R is for Right Hand Drive.

Congrats! Lockers under $4k is great, I bought mine two months ago for $3500 and it included aftermarket stuff, but also some rust and leaks oil. Still, it runs good and is fun as a second vehicle. are you going to daily drive it, make it into a trail rig, or both?

It should soon be my only vehicle. "Daily driver" doesn't completely apply to me. I walk to public transit during the week for my commute. I live a block from a Target store for much of my shopping. If I don't go out on the weekend, there are lots of weeks my truck doesn't get started. I haven't decided how much to add to it. At stock height suspension, the stock sized tires look fine. I'm sure I'll be adding sliders to the side. It remains to be seen if I buy quality bumpers and sliders, or if I utilize my marginal welding skills to fab something. On my old Isuzu Trooper (purchased for $1350.) I decided that my home crafting was completely adequate. Some others were less impressed.

Nice find. Welcome. I've always liked the red, and white, and green, and black. That's decent fab work, do what you can with what you have that makes you happy. Go for it.

When I built the bumper for my Trooper, I left almost all the metal from the stock bumper alone, and just replaced the plastic with my sheet metal fab job. https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.129264321414.115715.620321414&type=1&l=d561e6bf6c Since I had already slammed the under panels of the doors so they were hard to close, before I thought to make sliders; it didn't seem to make sense to do anything fancy. It turned out I didn't go fancy enough on the sliders. On a recent trip, I bent the arms from the frame to the slider tubes. I suppose that should have been anticipated. The arms for the slider were braced with angle iron cut from mattress frames. Not suitable for truck parts!

So I now have over 300 miles on the Toyota, and about 50 of those on fire trails. I've read several threads that indicate that if you wheel much, you'll eventually take off your flares. I had wondered why. I think they look good. Well although I may like them, the trail liked one too. I managed to not only scrub some of the "pretty" off my paint, I also managed to scrub a flare off. On another trail, I managed to knock the spare loose. Fortunately I was leading at the moment, and the next rig noticed my tire in the trail.

I would also add....check this site for walk-throughs, get questions answered, and find parts before bringing it to a mechanic.

(Of course I support the pre-purchase inspection by a qualified mechanic)

It will save you tons of money.

At a minimum, u will be armed with more knowledge about the topic than most mechanics. (Unless of course, they specialize in these rigs)
