We have a 73 that does NOT have an ignition key. Without the key we can't rotate the assembly to engage the removal pin and slide it out.

Anyone have a method (short of blowtorch) to remove the ignition switch so we can install a new or have a key made? None of our local locksmiths can make a key for it so I'll have to take it elsewhere or order a new assembly from SOR....but it needs to come out.
 
It's worth trying another key since the tumblers are usually so worn - my 74 was missing the key and a key from my '75 (with a bit of jiggling) finally turned the cylinder, then I removed it.

I have had success drilling them out. Its kind of like eating a coconut though. You just have to get a little brutal with it to get to the core.
 
I dunno how they steal cars over there but if you want to replace the barrel one good smack with a big screwdriver and hammer usually gets them out first time

disclaimer: I've only done it once it was my mates truck out in the bush when he lost the keys

I haven't done this soooo...put a large blade screw driver in the key slot, grab a wrench and turn hard. I believe that shears the keys in the tumbler. I was told that is how people would steal vehicles without the smart keys... I'm sure YouTube has something
 
The door key and fuel door are the same key as the ignition (on my '79 and hopefully yours). If it were me, I would carefully take apart either of those two locks before I ruined my ignition key assembly.
 
Why order a new one? Have a key cut to the factory code that's stamped on the cylinder face. Then your door keys match the ignition.

Maybe I'm missing something, but it seems like this is harder than it needs to be.
 
Sure...would love to but there are no codes on the cylinder...zero,Nada, zip.
Well that's a stinger. My 71 is rocking a 4-digit code on every cylinder. Ignition, doors, hatch: one key to rule them all. And let me guess, the dealer can't help based on the VIN? Were the doors keyed on the same key as the ignition in 1973?

Code for ignition key can be found on drivers door lock cylinder.
 
hi all , i think I may ask here for a little problem with my key on my 42 ( but i think use the same locking gears)
the key match the ignition lock and the fuel door lock but doesn't match the doors.....I don't know why.......

maybe the P.O. changed ignition cyinder and of course the key or maybe the doors lock are stuk.... but like i 've read

if the door lock cyinder has a code the key must have the same code ... IS THIS CORRECT ??? I can verify what happened

AND more , if the doors lock aren't stuck/seized , i have a pair of blank keys , with the code where /how i can make the matching key ??

I took apart my '76 FJ55 lock cylinder and hand-filed a key for it - both sides of the key. It helps to have the old key on hand, but it's not impossible without it. It's very satisfying to cut your own key by hand, from a blank, but save it for when you're not a hurry.
 
I have the fuel door lock too... no numbers on that anywhere either. Other than that, as it has soft top doors, there are no other locks and certainly no passenger door lock to pull a number from.

Guess I'll order up some new assemblies from Toyota.
