Sooooooo I get a call on Monday from a friend who says their 92 V6 4Runner isn't running right.... They are only about 400 miles away, on a road trip, so I say that if it'll make it here I'll see what I can do.

The truck makes it here Monday night, and I take a look. It's clearly missing on a few cylinders, and the engine is bucking all over the engine bay as well.... So Tuesday I take it to my dads shop, and after a little diagnosing, I find a dead cylinder on number 4... 0 psi.... So that leads me to believe that it has a valve issue. Pop the valve cover, and sure enough, the valve shim is missing out of the bucket, and the bucket is sitting low in it's hole.... So off comes the cam shaft, and out comes the bucket.... Broken valve spring! Great! nothing too bad right?

So I stick a spare valve spring in, and the valve comes up right to where it should be, so I figure the valve didn't get popped by the piston.... Time to put it back together.... So I get it all together and fire it up, sounds great, runs like a top!!! Test drive time! 4 minutes later... BA BA BA BA BA BA BA BA BA BA noise and vibration felt through the floor, and it dies........ Tow it back to dads.... Off comes the valve cover, #4 exhaust now has 0 clearance.... Off comes the head... Turns out it dropped the valve head into the cylinder.... Head and piston look like they've been beat to death with a pick axe....

Ok, so I order a head gasket set, and get to work cleaning up the head, and dropping the pan to swap the piston out... Somewhere in here I notice that the engine will only turn over about 358 dergrees, before it is stopped by something... I eliminate the trans by pushing the clutch in, and I pull the oil pump off to make sure it isn't that.... Then I look down the open intake valve hole on the #1 cylinder, and with the valve open I can see chunks of aluminum.... Off comes the passenger side head..... I found chunks of aluminum in all 6 cylinders after this.

Turns out that when the valve head broke off, it mangled the intake valve so bad that it allowed the chunks to get blown back up into the intake and spread around to all the cylinders... and there were enough in #1 to stop it from turning over....

So, should you ever find that you have a broken valve spring, TAKE OFF THE #($*$&#*@(@#($* HEAD BEFORE YOU DO A @(#*$ THING!!!!!!

Lesson learned..... I need a class of milk...

Sorry

Tomorrow's gonna be bad day 2.5... But it should be back together tomorrow.... (please......!)

I feel bad for you Jerod,i know how you feel when stuff like this happens.why not just install a long block since the damage seem pretty bad from what you describe IMHO.:bang:

Failure

Here you go Jerod just a few from work, where do you think the piton went?

Hehehe, that hole on the end should be empty... It's an extra..... :p I'll try to get a pic of the carnage tomorrow.....

Well a long block would have been fun, but we're trying to get it done fast and cheap, as usual.... I literally just figured the extent of the problem out today around 2 pm.... So 4 days from first phone call..... We're too far gone now to turn back.... Hehehehe

Fun times. I had to put a motor in my 3.4 4Runner bc somebody cross-threaded on of the spark plugs and it blew the plug out of the head. All the guts from the plug fell down inside the cylinder and destroyed the piston and took a chunk out of the head. I priced everything out (piston, gasket set, bearings, rings, etc) and I could buy a used motor for about the same price. I did fully disassemble the motor before I learned the extent of the damage tho. I feel your pain.

I read this cause we read that book to our son so I had to see what it was about on this thread. I feel bad for you for sure and I'll take you lesson and file it away so maybe I can learn from it as well. Your friend is lucky that your such a good friend!

That is what I was thinking. You are a very good friend.

The one thing leads to another part of this story is what reminded me of the book....

It's almost all the way back together.... Tomorrow morning it's intake, and rad hoses, and oil and coolant, and it better start and drive away, or I'm gonna loose it.... :p

Jerod, I really hope you get this thing back on the road and tell him not to come back.friend or not I hope this is not a freebie job.yes you are a good friend just for helping out doesn't mean it's free.IMO

Well yesterday morning things went from bad to worse... I think the engine spun a bearing now or something.... It fired up and ran ok, with a little valve noise, but it did not get far..... So it got towed out of my life yesterday.... I'm so over V6's.... Just not worth the trouble for the "power" they are supposed to have...

Onward!

Bummer!... I was hoping for a happy ending. Well I guess it kinda is with it being out of your life. Lol!
