618Henrik is correct. this is a road in iceland.

the unofficial rule (and soon to become very official) is that if the road is marked on an Icelandic official map (or in the Icelandic Garmin GPS map) it is a road.

But if you drive outside of the road... enven just 2 meters... you are driving off-road and that is very illegal and taken very seriously here.

we use the word off-road just like you read it. the trail here above is a road. if you drive on the side of it, you are off-road. and that is illegal.

for this to work correctly, you must follow the word on-road and off-road very strictly.... We have simple minds here in the north :)

What do you guys do out at the huts that you drive to? Just hang out for a couple days? I don't see any trees in the pictures, is that because they're all taken on glaciers? I don't have good maps handy to see how close Iceland is to the Arctic Circle, but it looks like you're close to it or above it. Assuming those buildings are built on glaciers, are there problems with having buildings on glaciers?

those are built in the highlands , not on glaciers but close to them, in the summertime there's no snow there
there are virtually no trees in the highlands weather conditions make it hard for them to grow, vegetation is very scarce and vulnerable so any offroad marks can be there for years

we just have fun in the huts, have a few drinks and just a good time, argue about which make of truck is the best :D eat good food and stuff like that =)

What brand and type light is that on roof rack? Remote?

Fantastic! Love hearing about Iceland and the builds of your rigs. Have wanted those powerful looking flares ever since I watched Top Gear go to the North Pole with the Arctic Trucks modified Hilux!

1991 VX limited HDJ81 (stock so far) w/ winter package & drawer/bed.

Nice pictures.. Keep em coming..

Got 44" flares coming from brettakantar hopefully before new years eve.

Funny stuff...... I would consider your on road to be off road! To me, anything that is't on a paved road is off road.

Gotta question ..

You 80 guys sure have 5.29 on your axles .. but do the others have the same options .?

I mean dunno if there are such kind of comparative reductions for those defender or korando guys ?

and do you guys run 4340 axles or added pins or strongest hub studs, wonder coz with those 44" plus tires looking for grip aired down to 3 PSI as you said .. there must be good amount of extra stress on all axle parts .. like your broken wheel bearing ..

haha... parts of Icelands main road (Ring-road #1) is gravel road and has single lane bridges.... :)

big parts of the road system are gravel roads in various conditions, and none of the roads on the highlands are paved.

Total population in Iceland is only around 350.000. And the Island is quite big but only 1/5 of the landmass is habitable.

My truck has 4.88 gearing , most 44" modded 80's have 4.88

other makes have various lowered ratios , patrols usually have 5.42 ratios
defenders have lower ratios available also

I'm running stock axles, stock hub studs , difference between your trucks and our's are we wheel mostly in snow which has much less stress than rock crawling, usually when trucks have been put on 46" tires there have been some strengthening , some change the diff out for a patrol diffs but keep the toyota knucles and brakes

I've got one broken kluckle stud in my truck now, planning on fixing that before I have my next trip :)

We are quite fond of original gear ratios. some of the 44" dudes even have stock 4.11 gearing but add crawl boxes for the extreme situations. this is true for the 80 series at least. Others go to the extreme and use 5.29 or even 5.71:1 ratios in the hilux and lighter duty cars with smaller engines.

I think nobody here massively changes out the birfs or axles. It is strong enough if you don´t drive like a mad man.

Driving in snow is almost always a bit tricky. in most cases its best to go slow and easy. If you put the pedal to the metal you usually dig yourself down and brake something anyhow :)

there are of course exeptions... and the ultralight-superpower versions like the willy´s dudes with 800 horsepower 350-v8 motors and ultra-strenght 700 series auto trans in a willy´s that is maybe 1200 kilos rely mostly on being able to skip on top of any snow with brute force and speed. That is just not the same sport :) with that kind of power and big tires, you can even drive on water if you like. (given enough speed). They basically use the same principal as is used when skipping stones on water... if they slow down for any reason.... it can take many hours to dig them out :)

That sounds great!

On my bucket list.

I think its only 4 hours from smell-ifax.

The last couple times me and the wife were in halifax I thought I should have taken a few more weeks and headed over, though Id kinda be more interested in going in the summer and doing some digging around for shiny rocks and such.

Also, Id be interested in learning much more about the icelandic beliefs regarding the faerie folk there, I've heard they will divert highways or buildings around rock piles, believing there is an elf or a dwarf that resides there.

this fairy and elves stories are something that's only talked about with foreigners , no one talks about them here or thinks about it, those are just stories
