I ruined my alternator with mud. Don't be like me. (2 Viewers)

Is that designed for the 200 or the 70?

Started off for the 70 but i helped rapidpower develop it for the 200 as the hoses interfered with the intercooler pipework. They are $2k AU (PDP in perth sell for $2300 to mines but get them direct at $2k) but they will outlast the car. Also increased outputs

We don't have the turbodiesel here in the US. We only get the 5.7l gas engine.

Epic trip and adventure. Stories to be told in future campfires!

Once you get your car back, may want to give a good look and cleaning to the condenser and radiator. It's not uncommon to get mud caked way in there such that the cooling system gets compromised.

Its in a bad spot to begin with. Bad design

Is a relocation bracket an option? Move the alternator higher or swap its location with another accessory? Maybe someone has come up with that for the Tundra or Sequoia version of the 5.7?

Could be that it is where it is to get enough airflow for cooling & relocation wouldn't be a good idea.

Alternators don't like Mud/Water. Killed my 80 series Alt. like 15 years ago doing same thing, learned my lesson. LX looking good btw..

How you are going to drive the alternator if you move it?

I'm not sure which number would be higher: the (silly) things that us men have done to get a girl to smile -or- the number of grains of sand on the beach.... At least it was a fun trip and it will be a great story for them to tell!

This!

I would not call this bad design. In any OEM design, one wouldn't believe the degree of analysis and consideration that goes into the simplest of things. Way way beyond what most imagine. And several orders of magnitude what a small aftermarket operation will invest. In design, most everything is considered. And everything is a trade. Optimal for one thing is not optimal for another.

Reliability and performance is a huge consideration. Water is probably a significant consideration. Mud, not so much.

It's not by chance that the fording depth is rated to exactly 27.55 inches. Below that, Toyota will uphold their warranty. Beyond that, in mud, not so much.

At least that’s still about 8 inches better than a Jeep Wrangler, where Jeep once claimed 30 inches and are now seeing the repercussions of that claim. It might not even be able to handle 10 inches. Fun read - Why Did A New Jeep Wrangler Die In Ten Inches Of Water?

I’m still 2-3 car washes away from really getting rid of all of the mud :(

I just wish I could go through one of the fancy car washes with the under-car sprayer without getting all the BS easy-wax ultra-shine product crap on my paint..

I've heard of getting one of those rainbow lawn sprinklers and parking it under the truck for a bit. Of course here they'd freak out about the water use but in other places it's probably fine.

Glad yours is rolling again.

A garden watering wand reaches a lot of spots. Perfect angle for the underside.

Beautiful photos and looks like an awesome trip. Thank you for sharing! I had heard something about the alternator being prone to mud somewhere else, but I forget. Back when I had my LR4, a few of us were off-roading in CA and some of the rover folks got overly excited going back in forth in deep mud - I mean deep! Well, next day, none of them would start! All had to have alternators replaced. I parked on the side and watched them get their trucks dirty for nothing and probably ruin their alternator. :p

Unrelated, do you have Front Runner drawers in your LX? I just installed them in my LC200 and they seem to rattle a bit more than in my LR4. I think they have settled a bit and I need to tighten the turn buckles.

If I may jump in...

I also started to have a nagging, little metallic rattle from my FR drawers. After a lot of tightening, load removal/reorganizing, etc., I discovered that the rattle was coming from the drawers rattling against the frame.

The fix was easy, I applied some of this: Weatherstripping to the top inner edge of each drawer and the corresponding surface on the frame:

Worked like magic - now absolutely dead quiet. And the drawers now close with a reassuring thud.

THANK YOU so much - wow, I am so humbled and thankful for your post. I really appreciate your help with this matter - that's exactly what is happening with mine so this will be an easy fix. I already ordered that weatherstripping (thanks for the link!!!).

Really appreciate your help!

Regards, David
