I need some help installing LED tail lights... (1 Viewer)

Back to business. I took time to get my bumper and tails installed before Cruisin' The Woods. Didn't get reverse found and wired, but I have Vision X rock lights with rare earth magnets strategically placed for action if needed. Then I decided to run out to Colorado for a friend's wedding and now after picking up some sweet parts in Cali and visiting with a few friends there I have time to post up pics.

I think they are sweet! They are not over bright.. if brand new OEM tails are a 5 on dim1-10bright, then these are 6 or 7, so very adequate which is how I like my tail lights. The truck sits high enough that anything brighter would be seriously annoying to folks behind me.

Man those look nice and the size is great. On the website you posted it said they have internal resisters? Did you have to do any special wiring to hook them up? How are the back up lights?

I have done nothing to the wiring, that is to say I have a bad ground somewhere so unless I have peak voltage, one side blinks and the other doesn't. I use a flasher that isn't load depended so it doesn't matter whether a resister exists or not.

Reverse is bright. If I need more, you can see the Vision X's stuck on the bumper too (rare earth magnets epoxied to them). I use them as extra bright reverses when not in night wheeling duty (which is 99.9999% of the time).

Post a pic with the reverse lights on when you get a chance please. Really considering these for my next project that will be all LED lit.

Had a cool Range Rover guy track me down the other day into a parking lot - he's restoring an old Series 1 and wanted to know if there was some light like mine for his restoration , quite impressed with how they look . First person in quite awhile that complimented directly on "nice old 40 series" , refreshing to hear vs the usual "nice J**p" comments .

I'm interested if there's another group buy!

I am assuming everyone leaving the OEM connector in tact and just cutting off the connector from the lights being removed.

Does anyone have any better pics of the wire color matching?
What colors from the old plug match what colors of the led?

From looking at 1911 pic

OEM Plug colors = LED Plug colors
white/black= white
?? = brown
?? = red
?? = green
?? = black

Also, how exactly does the resistor tie in?

Thanks:beer:

Finally got mine in last night; fortunately it was 10 degrees cooler than normal for August here!

I went cheap and easy on the mounts, just cut four pieces of s**** steel (two per side) to act as hold-down clamps:

Wires all connected, using heat-shrink tubing and "NO-OX-ID" grease to protect the connectors from the elements:

Then I used the load resistor to jump between the turn signal and ground wire, per the diagram on the packaging. Used zip ties to attach them to convenient holes in my cross-member:

Reinstalled the stock splash guard/cover, and was done. Like everyone else said, these are bright! Testing them by myself, I wasn't sure if I could tell if the brake lights were working or not, sitting in the truck while working the brake pedal - but they light up the shop in back of the truck, even with the shop door open. Less-than-ideal photos with the tail lights only on; one with a flash and one without:

The light was so bright that it washed out my point-and-shoot camera (the tail lights aren't really orange). I'm really happy with these; so much safer and more visible than the stock lights.

Does this help?

Rudi's diagram should tell you all about the wire colors; I don't remember exactly which was which from my installation, but using the wiring schematic from my Factory Service Manual it was dead easy. If you need me to, I can get out the schematic again and tell you. The wire colors for the new LED are clearly shown in the included paperwork.

The load resistor is only needed for the turn signals; it just goes in series between the turn signal wire and the ground wire (on each side).

Ah that is very helpful, but I only have 4 wires coming out of the connector?

What am I missing?

Shane makes really nice stuff, but I've not seen them. Knowing Shane though, I'd guess they are seriously detailed and OCD. Given Jetranger's issues, the key would be whether they are any smaller than the SOR guards.

I bought the SOR guards and the lights are a tight fit... however the guards are so off that my outside holes do not align to reinsert the bolts. I had to ghetto zip tie the ends.
Going to call them tomorrow to file a quality complaint.

Lights look great!

Here is the thread showing Shane's and SOR compared

Mine (12/79 build) has a white with black stripe (ground) coming from the stock connector, that yours seems to be missing. Yours is a '78 (from your sig.)? Do you have the wiring schematic from the FSM for it?

No. Ground was run separate. Got it figured out and working well.
Still need to install resistors, but I've previously had blinker issues that still need to be run to ground.

Hazards work great w/o resistors

Thanks Mud!

I was looking at the lights in this thread and found they just won't fit for me. So onto Google Image search I went looking for LED tail lights from AUS. As it turns out, there is already a thread for the ones I found and ordered- https://forum.ih8mud.com/40-55-series-tech/731231-l-e-d-tail-lights.html edit: <-- that thread's lights aren't the same, but similar

Got them while I was out on a camping trip, and so far I like what I see. They are nearly identical to stock 40 tail lights. It will be a while before they go on, so don't expect functioning pics soon.

source is Tojo 4WD- http://www.tojo4wdcentre.com.au/par...led-led-taillight-assembly-lh-or-rh-universal

even with current favorable exchange rates, they are still expensive. The other recent idea I had were Suzuki Samurai tails.. a quick search didn't turn up much.

just set on a 4x4Labs rear bumper to illustrate

I ordered this same bumper from 4x4 labs, and a set of lights from the All Four x4 Spares site, $268 AUD shipped to my door. Guess we will see how it turns out!
