Good question lol. I wonder myself. When I was in H.S. we had an old Caterpillar in Ag mech class that had a crank and that was the only way it would start. The kick back would break your arm if you didn't hold that crank right. lol!:hhmm:

Here is a video.

Just make sure to sand the nut clean and lube it before trying.

A fellow cruiser head tried starting my old 2f... Almost broke his wrist.

If you get in the way it will really hurt you. As kids we used to get the old hand crank corn shellers whipping as fast as possible. Once my big brother got too close and was thrown about 10 feet. I have to imagine an engine crank would be much worse.

While starting early JD 2 cylinder tractors or hit-and-miss engines one must find the right spot in the engine's rotation of cycles before really cranking on it.

No fair warming it up first. Either of my engines would kill you trying to start them without some starting fluid. I have to crank quite a while while pumping the pedal to start them.

The interface between the crank and the nut is designed to spit out the handle as soon as it starts. It's unlikely it could "hurt you".

I learned to drive in my Dad's Model A and half the time he had to crank it to start it while I ran the spark and throttle levers per his instruction while he cranked. He never would let me try but it also never kicked him hard that I remember. Of course he also learned to drive in A's and T's and had his share of cranking in the 30's I'm sure. Does anyone actually have a Toyota hand crank?

I believe the risk is from starting backwards or backfiring - the one-way nut doesn't help with that.

I've got one mounted on the front of my cruiser...and IDave definitly has one :D

Ok, I admit it. I tried to figure out how I could do it like all the cool kids...
Unfortunately, my winch blocks the bolt...

A real man just puts the TC in neutral and starts it by pulling on the winch cable.

With his teeth.

Oh, I've started it plenty of times by popping the clutch while it's moving. But it's got to be in gear!

hmm.... if the t case is in Neutral, and the P.T.O. in reverse (slack), and the gearbox in 1st, could it be possible to turn the engine over?

Bingo. A lot of older vehicles used to have a manual (cable) retard for the distributor or magneto, just to avoid a backfire while starting. Most of the time you didn't need it, but... one time when I didn't retard it, my 1946 Indian Chief kick-starter pitched me on the ground several feet away when it backfired. I always used the retard after that.

Johnny, what good does the handle do with your winch in the way? For those that are wondering, I believe these are still available from Toyota, and if I'm not mistaken are the same or similar to the FJ55 spare tire hand crank.

The winch has a worm gear, so no. Was just pullin your leg.
