I've been running 10-13 lbs of boost in my BJ60 since 2008. My turbo is not quite dialled in for this engine. Its builds it boost with a bit more RPM, so some hill I still get sucked down to slow.

I've owned an 80 with a 3fe and my BJ60. I sold the 80 series and kept the 60 with the 3B. Yes the 80 was quicker. But poking around town and the trails the 3B is a lot of fun.
I have 300K kms on my 60. So its not too high. I put my turbo on 75K kms ago. They must have a turbo to push a 60 series.

If you have the engine, put it in. If you are buying a diesel get a 1Hd-t or 1HZ. Personally one day I am getting a 1HZ or a 15b-t to replace my 3B. After being on this forum since 2004 I have seen countless 3B owners with double the Kms on their cruisers. They are a tough engine, despite the experience others have had. Many out of 60 series have been abused as they have to push a lot of weight and the EGT's get really high. SO that's why I say a turbo and EGT gauge are important.

Yea so I finished my project.

The 3B is a awesome engine, not as slow as anybody makes it sound and the milage is great.

Honestly no offence but I'm so glad I got rid of the stupid boat anchor 3FE & automatic - though it may have been a little faster, it feels far more sluggish and is a inferior setup to the 3B/h55f.

If you think a land cruiser is about speed you must be retarded - it should be more about the experience of driving.

Peace out.

more pics!?

Your install looks pretty good. I think you need a fan shroud though. I would like to mention that a 3fe is not stupid or a boat anchor. It is not a diesel but it is a great engine and will last as long if not longer than your 3b.

fan shroud is a good thing, theres a post about how to fab one up in mud somewhere

Overall how was the swap? There is just something about the 3B that I love, I just had one rebuilt to swap into my BJ45 with an H55 which Onur noted to have a tap when he worked on it so replacing it is in order when it takes the big crap. However it just chugs along and starts immediately every time.

Having owned a few 62s one with an H55 in it I’d be surprised if the the 3B has anything over the 3FE but get that s***ty automatic out of a 62 and it’s game on.

Cool set up for sure!!

The swap was not easy.

Nothing is the same between the BJ60 and FJ62. Nothing is plug & play.

I wouldn’t do it again unless I had a shop. My parents driveway was not ideal.

So far it has been awesomely reliable. The 3FE left me stranded a few times. Many vacuum leaks to go wrong, lots of emission junk, poor economy - I’m not looking back.

The 3FE did have some impressive torque though.

@gimme a 60 Where in BC (I assume it was local) did you pick up your 3b? I have a very tired 3bii that might need replacement in the next few years and thought I should start the search.

Yea I bought my 3B in cherryville,

I have a spare 3B complete drive train with 400 psi across the board… haven’t decided if I want to sell it yet (I want to stuff it in a 40)

Odds are I’m going to sell it come September.

I just had 3B rebuilt in Denver to replace the current getting tired 3b in my Bj45. I’ll keep old 3b for parts, getting parts for the rebuild was tough to say the least.

As much as I love them moving forward I’ll step up to new diesel.

Good job getting it done.

You’ll have to keep us updated

The good news is you are basically setup to swap to a 13/14/15b basically bolt in for the future.

I drove my 60 series From summerland to Victoria - it’s about a 7 hour drive.

In the mountains the 3B is dead slow, momentum is key.

On the highway, it’s a pleasure I can even pass people too.

Ended up getting 23 MPG in a LOADED WAGON, my 3FE would be lucky to get half. The 3B is little, but it’s mighty strong engine. I would never drive my 3FE that far just for the cost.

Not a bad experience, it really does take time to get used to driving though. (It’s not for everybody)

I think Diesel vs Gasoline is more something like a personal thing, some like it, some none. And I guess, a lot of people (maybe not here, but more in general, at least, when I take them on a ride with mine) think of lots of torque when they think of a Diesel-Engine, which is the case, if you drive one of those new CI/charged/superduper-Diesel (hands up, it's impressive, what a new 1.6 turbodiesel delivers) .
In such a truck, a old DIesel is perfect (to me), but it's a different way of driving. I'm using more the lower rpm's and love the sound it makes.

I have one of the MB Diesels installed, direct injection, no balancer shafts, low redline limit, but it will run forever, since those engines are designed to last 10.000-12.000h under load (to power generators, agri-equipment, trucks, boats, ...).
Fells like a real truck, slow but steady. Once the engine is running (and zero electric necessary to do this), it won't stop. It's atually harder to shut down the engine, then to start it (common phrase down here in Brazil).

So kudos for the swap, BUT (and sorry to ask that), why didn't you go for a bigger/torquier diesel? You were keen to get a toyota diesel? I'm asking, because I'm looking also for a possible swap candidate and I would maybe go for a MWM (Brazilian Engine) oder a bigger Mercedes. The "small" Mercedes Engines OM603 and so are not avail down here (same as the toyota diesels).

Maybe you also want to think about a turbo upgrade. A little bit of boost every diesel can handle :) it won't be awesome, but it helps. I can do almost everything one gear lower then before.

You get it!

Yea they reason why i went with the 3B is because I’m poor and 17.

If I had money I would drop in a 1HZ, but I don’t.

That being said the 3B swap was definitely worth it for the budget I have.

Well, then you're almost 20years ahead of me :)

Got it. I would drive it like this now, as I said, there are more or less "cheap" turbo upgrades possible.

I’m not even sure how one would find a 1HZ in Canada. We have mining trucks here, they are beat and the government doesn’t want us to have them.

But that would be pretty sweet. I didn’t pay tonnes for my BJ60 drive train- it only has 110,000km original.
