So driving home today I noticed my speedo spiked high and then stopped altogether. Got home, pulled the cable housing off the tcase and sure enough: broken cable. I must've pissed off the Cruiser gods somehow, because these last couple months have been hell on my 62.

So my question is, are late 60 cables the same as 62 cables? There are several late 60s (but no 62s) in a local yard here so I'm really hoping they are....

Sucks. Sorry Spook.

Old cable or new? I replaced mine on one of the 60's and wasn't too hard, nor too expensive (20'ish iirc). May be worth buying new (even at stealership), considering how long they last. I wouldn't get a used one unless you need one immediately, or budget constrained to get used.

Mine was making racket before it died - jumpy needle etc. afterwards - smooth as butter. No help on if they are interchangeable...

GL!

why the hell are you buying a used speedo cable? buy a new one dummy.

Need one before Saturday. Can't wait for a new one to be shipped so for now I need to source a local replacement that I can use until I get my hands on a new one.

Take your old cable with you to pick&pull. Compare it to the 60s. Maybe even look at some other speedo cables from other cars and see if other models have something you can use. Stranger things have happened.

Why? Just drive slower than the other cars on the road and you'll be fine.

Need it by Sat... Called dealership nearby? CDan and cost with expedited shipping (it's small - flat rate is cheap) - should be time to get one before sat.

I head out of town for two weeks on Saturday morning, and I'm supposed to be taking the 62, so ideally I'd like to get one tomorrow morning, but if I could get one on Friday I could get it installed.

coming through seattle or other direction? I have one you could borrow in my 60 if it's a direct fit/swap...

OR you could see if your local dealer has one... (do you see this this time?)

:flipoff2: lol

Seriously - i'm driving the subaru most days and if i need to drive the 60 i can guess i'm still going slower than will get me in trouble... Mine is new as of <5k mi ago...

i can basically tell you within 5mph how fast im going just by knowing what gear im in and looking at the rpms

With an auto ( what spook has ), speed varies per gear and depending on whether the TC is locked up.

Got GPS? It's not 100% but will better than nothing until you replace the cable.

I'd buy new...

Haha yeah that was the first thing I did. New is about $120 from a local dealer and they can't get it in time. I might just have to be SOL for the 62 and just order a new cable from Dan while I'm gone so it can be here and ready to install when I get home.

The cable assembly part numbers are different, but the number changes 3 times during the US FJ62 production run. From what I can tell in the pictures, they are really, really, really close to being the same. Close enough that I would try it.

Biggest difference is that the FJ62 cable should be longer due to the transmission in the FJ62 being longer than the H55. Likely not by a whole lot.

CCOT shows 71" for FJ60 through 87... Doesn't say 62's length.

help?

While i don't think CCOT to be the most trusted of info... They only have one option for both the Toyota cables - one's 50$ and other basically 100$ - yikes.

aftermarket cables for 60 are 20'ish, none listed for a 62...

maybe at least measure your existing cable - 71"?
compare w/ higher res:

Seriously Spook you must need glasses.

You coming through Seattle or no? If you are you remember where i live - you can borrow my speedo cable (if the 60 works in 62 - anyone confirm?).

Ha, nah I had just gotten off a 12+ hour night shift. LAAAAAME

I'm having to go to Moses Lake for two weeks come Saturday morning. Don't have time to hoof it all the way to Seattle, but I appreciate the offer. I just realized that 60 series cables are 6" shorter than 62 series cables, so I'm boned for using one from a 60. Looks like I'll just have to take some tools with me and work on swapping the cable one day after work (in two weeks of 12-hr shifts, yeah right).

Sounds like your broke? But I've been giving a little thought to something like this.

At this point I'm really considering swapping my speedo out for an electronic one and runnning a wire conduit in place of the cable. I can get the sensor (Toyota part too) to put on my tcase. I just gotta get the speedo itself and find out how to wire the Toyota connector up to it. Honestly I think the GPS setup is a great idea, but you're still susceptible to loss of signal if it's heavily overcast, you're driving in the mountains, or under alot of cover from foliage.
