And the grawnching sounds (of repeated unsuccessful gear changes) still haunt me to this day!

I like the smurf blue

as it turns out, I have mangled more on the truck than my hubby :hillbilly: :o

Tapage: oh yeah, just happened to our HZJ75 here in Peru on an easy offroad trail in the Cordillera Blanca in Peru with OME greasable shackles! I guess we already drove since a while with a broken pin and when driving I heard a noise from the suspension. At lunch while my wife was cooking I just looked under the car just because I was bored and saw ALL 3 pins on the rear shackles broken! Needless to say that I drove with 3km/h down to Huaraz, where I had a non permanent solution made of hardened bolts. We were very lucky that the 4th pin didn't break!
Here pictures and on the 2nd page you see that the design is not very well made in my opinion:

https://forum.ih8mud.com/threads/what-steel-needed-for-strong-shackle-pins-broke-my-ome-ones.819481/

There is no greasable shackle for 75 series in Peru or Bolivia so I just ordered yesterday 4140 CrMo steel in Lima (I am in Cusco right now) for 40$ and a machine shop will turn make them for 5$/piece but to MY specs.
But read yourself...

Not to hijack, but if any of you have an idea how to improve the design just feel free to write. I see my pins are little bit different than this one here but all 3 broke at the same weak spot.

I also see that this pin here on this thread has the same, huge grease hole! I see no need to have it that big, I will go down to 2mm (mine is about 4mm). I guess if the grease is not cold and you have a good grease gun that shold be fine.

Yep That looks like a cast piece, which is crap idea for what the piece needs to take The manufacturer is taking short cuts

Yes dear, you have... :-)

...I also see that this pin here on this thread has the same, huge grease hole! ...

It's not that she's only broken the greasable variety of spring pins; regular ones have given in just as frequently on her truck. IIRC the last one punched a hole thru the bracket (front, at the frame mount, right side of the truck).
We'll see how this goes now that the truck is on 35s.

Drill them as small as possible (tiny)-and don't cut away any steel at the OD- will be minimal weakening. the grease will still find it's way out.
