Yesterday I noticed a slight rattle/whine when I 'engine brake' in 3rd gear. None of the other gears give this sound when engine braking. On acceleration all gears sound fine. The sound stops when the clutch is disengaged during 3rd gear engine braking.

Any ideas? Linkage, bearing, pinion?

it depends on how bad it is. Is it new and getting worse?

Yeah common problem with the h55f. Mine wines in 3rd too when downshifting but it has done for the last 150,000. My HZJ75 has 375,000 on her now and 5th is still good which is a bigger worry. My mate literally has to hold his gearstick in 5th. Its an 85 model though and the later gearboxes are ever so slightly different to combat that problem. Later as in hzj75 on so about 1990.

I haven't had the car for long and haven't put any serious mileage on it yet, so can't judge if its getting worse or not. On august 1st we're leaving for our world trip, so am debating if i should have it looked at or just trust that it won't get worse. Shifting into all gears is smooth and strong and I had the complete clutch group replaced 500km ago by a 70-series specialist. Its a 1995 model.

I would at least change the oil and have it inspected, see what kind of particles are in there. If the whining is annoying, you really dont want to have to listen to it on a world trip and it may get worse quickly.
How many klms on the engine/gearbox? Usually, a H55F will do 350000 before they begin to show their age.

My 95 troopy has a bearing that makes a rattling noise as I accelerate onto the freeway , then gets quieter as the gearbox warms up. It hasnt gotten any worse in 5 years and 100000klms.

Complete oil change was done with the clutch plate replacement, no metal parts in the old oil. There is no rattle and whine with acceleration only with deceleration in 3rd. Guess i'll just leave it as is

I've just started hearing the same thing in my HJ60 over the past week or so. Only in 3rd gear when decelerating. It's well over 350,000 Ks so probably getting a bit worn. Seems to be more noticeable when it's cold. I might squirt an additive in there and see what happens.
