I need some help finding the reason I have a clunk in the front end when turning slow (like in a parking lot). I did some research and found that the panhard bolt might need to be tightened. While I was under the truck I noticed grease on one side but none on the other. I haven’t checked the tightness of the panhard bolt yet because I think this might be the problem. Not sure what the part is called, sorry for being green! Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You need a front axle seal kit for starters. That large roundish bit is the knuckle. The kit is not expensive , but its good day covered in grease and oil to do it. There are a few videos on youtube showing step by step directions.
There are other things that cause clunking at low speed such as the tie rod ends and worn bushes in the suspension eyes. The leaf packs can also move in tight turns.
Whatever it is , you need a seal kit for the axle. The oil in the diff is mixing with the grease in axle.
Im guessing yours have never been done since new.

My BJ70 makes a noise from the front end similar to what you have described when the spring bushings are worn. If you can get someone to turn the steering wheel, with the truck running, from stop to stop; you can watch the rear spring bushings/pin for signs of movement. If you see movement, the bushings are probably worn.

It might be only be an oddity in my 70, but it is consistent ( every couple of years the bushings need to be replaced with the noise being a wear indicator).

Good luck

Ok thanks I’ll get the wife to help me check the spring bushings tomorrow

My 73 had a clunk at slow speeds in the steering.......we greased the slip joint in the shaft and that was the end of that clunk.

Thanks. I have a grease gun somewhere in the shed. I’ll grease it up tomorrow and hopefully it’s an easy fix

With front leaf springs I'm not sure where the panhard (or its bolt) would be?

cheers,
george.

I have worn polyurethane spring eye bushings that make that clunk.

Does anyone know where to buy front outer axle seals for a 1993 hzj73? I’ve searched the forum and places to buy cruiser parts on the web and all I can find is inner axle seals. Thanks

When looking for parts, remember that numerous other 7* series use the same parts, such as a 75 series

Hi Kurt

I sent you an email yesterday regarding buying a lift kit. I would like to get the front axle seal kit too. Do you need a VIN? Thanks

We should be good with a year and model on both of those items. That said if you have a frame number handy go ahead and send it in the email or a subsequent email too. More information the better!

The easiest location is right off of the aluminum tag under the hood. It will also have a model code that is helpful. Frame/Vin and Model Code fwiw:
