So I am a newly converted man from being a jeep collector for about 10 years. I purchased my first FJ40 about 4 months ago and now I have 4 FJ's, Love them.

Just picked up a 1985 60 series with a 2F motor. Was taking it for a ride and trying to find what sounds are "normal" and what aren't. I noticed that my smog pump must have a bearing going out. It is making a good bit of grinding sound and it looks as though the bearing has play in it with the engine running.

I assume these things aren't supposed to make that much noise. I am looking to see if one of you fine lads can point me at a thread to remove and rebuild that thing. Next, I was wondering if I can drive it without or if it will run like total crap. I really don't need to drive it, just curious.

Lastly if anyone has done it what is the difficulty level.

Thanks in advance as always fellas!!!

1rst off it WILL come out without removing the power steering pump. It just takes a little jostling and pulling. Once out your options are to remove and replace with a tensioner pulley, replace either the bearings or more likely the carbon vanes that have disintegrated within the pump. Good luck!

Search for smog pump and read up - many many threads on this.

I don't think anyone has had success with rebuilding these as one of the bearings and the carbon vanes are specific to these pumps and unobtanium unless you want to buy 1000 of them. All the small rebuilding houses I've contacted have stopped rebuilding these pumps because of the parts quantities they would have to buy, versus how few pumps they rebuild.

If you need an air pump where you live, it's best to just have yours rebuilt at www.rebuildingfactory.com Only place I know that replaces carbons and bearings. Used to be cheap but now around $250 plus shipping. If the carbons are good, there's a rebuilding house in Sante Fe, CA that has the bearings but doesn't replace the vanes, for about $125. I think it's smog pump unlimited and I talked to the owner directly about 6 months ago.

A1 Cardone from carquest, etc, but they're junk. Just search.

If you don't need the pump, and it's an OE unit, get an idler pulley or make one and sell the core to someone who can use it (like me :D).

FJ40Jim on this board sells good idler pulley replacements for the pump and excellent price.

Oh, and don't call it an FJ.

While you're in there....... Depending on the emissions regulations in your state you might want to consider a desmog. Do a search for "my desmog thread" as a good starting point.

I had thought about that but a buddy of mine said that it may hurt the resale value. I really wanted to keep it stock.

Thoughts???

I think it kind of depends on what part of the country you're in. I'm in the south east so around here it's a common thing to do.... Most of us here don't have the emission tests that folks in other parts of the country have to deal with. If you're out west or in the north east you're probably right to factor that in if you're concerned about selling it later.

Keeping it stock is nice, but it gets increasingly difficult and expensive to do so, particularly with smog components since most, if not all, are now discontinued by Toyota. Plus, a properly and cleanly de-smog'd 2F in a 60 engine bay is a beautiful thing.

Once I desmogged and replaced all the vacuum lines (Carr-McMaster silicone) in my first 60 (Ingrid), it ran better than any other 60 I've been in before or since. (JimC Carb as well)

My current 60 has a gutted smog pump acting as idler pulley. Everything is still enact smog-wise...just not pumping any air.

Mine looked like this on the inside, but Oreily's had one in stock

Be careful. My pulling my seized smog pump (sorry Andy) is leading to:

1. JimC pulley

2. New PS pump and pulley

3. All new hoses, water pump, thermostat and belts

4. Full desmog

5. New oil pump

6. New oil cooler

7. Head job.

I was tempted to just pull the thing and do a full engine job with new pistons, but I held myself back. :)

Holy *&^%... now I know what i'm looking forward to.

Thanks for the info Beno, BTW This is Wesley!!! Is just the smog pump difficult to replace??

Hey Wesley!

Smog pump was easy to pull once I got all of the emissions junk off of the DS fender .... ;)

I'll post some pics when I get home. Right now I am stuck in ATL gridlock due to the snow here....

:)

Any pics would be great!! What year is your 60? Did you find the parts were bad when you got into change the smog pump or just figured you would do while you were in there??

Shoot me an email if you rather and THANKS!!! as always

Also add all gaskets-- HG, side cover, oil pan, VC (rubber and nuts), front timing cover and front crankshaft seal.

Would it be easier if I plan for the vehicle to be down for a couple of weeks to pull the grill and radiator. This way I would have plenty of room to work. Honest opinions gents. I don't mind a little extra work to save me a bunch of hassle. Also since I don't plan to de-smog it and all that STUFF will be in the way.

MScatena and to who ever else, be sure to clean out the ABV (Air Bypass Valve). The smog pump will fill it with pieces of the vanes and block its from closing.

Damn, that looks like a mess in there. Were you able to do anything with it?
Swannie
no fixing just replaced, I plan to keep the old one gutted and used as a pully once I get it smogged, so every two years I'll put the working pump on for a smog test

Thanks for the info, I did find a ton of trash in the air tubes I'll pull the ABV to make sure it's clean
