I tried to gut mine but when I put it back together it would not turn if I tightened everything down snugg. If I left the screws/bolts backed off it would wobble. And mine looked like yours when I cracked her open so I was pretty sure it was dead in the water. JimC pulley has been flawless though.

I can't really advise you any better than others on whether to rebuild or roll the dice with an off-brand unit, but... replacing it without pulling everything apart is definitely do-able, just tedious. I loosened my PS pump enough to push it out of the way and was able to get the old smog pump out and a NAPA/Cardone unit in. Lots of wiggling, and turning, and twisting, and cursing. There's not a lot to unbolting the pump - all the pain is in the logistics of getting it out, and then reattaching the inlet and outlet hoses.

Having a copy of the emissions manual/diagram handy is helpful if you decide to disconnect anything along the way to improve access. But like I said, only thing I moved was the PS pump and that was just a few inches over.

Good luck - and remember that replacements don't usually come with a pulley, so save yours.

Thanks to all for your input on this. I'll keep everyone in the loop. I'm thinking I'll be like Benoit and end up replacing a bunch of stuff while in there.

Would anyone happen to have the complete emissions tech manual for a 1985 FJ or point me to a place to buy one other than new. Want to have all my duckies in a row!!!

Or you could check my sig line or Trollhole has a thread in the market place where he has EVERY conceivable FSM linked.

Beno, do you find that air- cooling your valve springs gives an appreciable horsepower gain?

;)

Also add all gaskets-- HG, side cover, oil pan, VC (rubber and nuts), front timing cover and front crankshaft seal.
