Recently I am getting VSC and TRAC lights randomly. Mainly during highway driving. I assume I have a wheel speed sensor going out.

Next time it happens I’d like to try and diagnose which sensor is failing. Any way to do that without going to the dealer?

Since it’s intermittently failing it has been hard to get it to replicate when I can look into it.

Thanks,

Tommy

Sensors can trigger codes and lights for a lot of different reasons including wheel bearings and steering rack issues.

VSC/ TRAC light and VSC off light. It’s intermittent, but most common on longer drives.

I understand the lights can mean a few things. But my question is the same, is there a good way to read the codes being thrown without going to a dealership?

You could get a code reader on Amazon and read the codes yourself. I carry one in my truck.

I have a Bluetooth code reader, but for some reason it isn’t reading anything except CEL codes. Would you care to share the one you have that will read ABS/ sensor codes?

Sorry, I am not home right now. I am out of town and can check when I get back next week.

Scan it for codes. The code will identify which (LF, RF, LR or RR) wheel sensor if that is the cause.

Don’t mind to do that. My scanner doesn’t read the VSC codes, just CEL codes. A suggestion on a quality code reader that will do that would be awesome.

1) If you don't end up with a solution and still need help in a week or so, I'll be going through Knoxville and can read the VSC module.

2) BUT, oddly, I had it report my RR wheel speed sensor, so I replaced it with an OEM part. Unfortunately, the code still returns after being cleared. My dash light Christmas show has only come back once shortly after, though, so who knows. Anyone see that before?

Will do. I am doing some research on the best one. Was considering a scan gauge so I could watch trans temps but can’t get a clear answer on if it can read those codes. Also I see on here that some people have had issues with 100’s and scan gauge.

I would suggest getting a Toyota Techstream clone from Amazon ($30-60) that includes the cable and software. You would be all set for this and any future issues.

I had the same issue. Solved it with tech stream and saw an ABS sensor wasn’t reading correctly. Replaced the sensor and all lights have been off since

Techstream is what you want for general maintenance.

Yes get suggested TS software and mini-vci. Tech-stream will access/diagnose stored dtc’s and other ECU data that doesnt trigger a CEL. Scanguage or similar wont provide that data. You can run live tests on each ecu and each sub component the ecu manages. Many other benefits as well.

Do a search for it on the forum to know where to get the right mini-vci ( some dont work as well as others)

Lights come on only when taking a sharp right turn. Sharp left does not cause the errors. Is this an indicator of a specific side?

Yes but it depends on what's potentially damaged. Ie, if it's a matter of a stretched cable, then getting a light on a right turn would imply to me that it's on the right side pulling on the sensor as the truck shifts. But, if it's a short of some kind, and lights come on in a right turn, then it could imply something on the left where the axle becomes closer to the body during the turn.

Thanks for the response. cables are intact but I will definitely check for any stretching on both sides when at full lock. It's not happening on normal turns only on a pretty much full locked right turn. Resets every time I shut off the truck.
