I was wondering how often do most people grease their shackles? I haven't done mine in about 2 years but I don't think I put more than 5K a year on the odometer.

Whenever the lady chained to the wall complains.

whenever I see that the grease there is filthy and/or whenever I feel like the suspension needs some more grease...
I DD mine on some horribly muddy/dusty dirt roads, so it works out to about once every month or so.

Takes five minutes, just hit it once a year whether it needs it or not :)

With every oil change when I grease the drive train and before any off road outing.

I never do. No greasable shackels here. Just old rotten OEM bushings rubbing against the shackle.

Is there a way to grease the OEM shackel? Would it help the bushings to get just a touch of grease on them?

don't bother untill you are replacing them. they don't come apart easy and chances are you need to use a torch to melt the rubber slightly to get out the pins. they seem to fuse in the rubber. i just used a propane torch with a pry bar. they were fawked after. which is ok as I was putting on new ome ones with anti reversal. and all new poly bushings.

I don't think they need grease every oil change. the grease makes them not squeak, I would do it definately once a year, or anytime you are in lots of water/mud. just to flush out anything. they are pretty tight fit though. hard to believe anything could get in there. stock lasted 20 yrs plus. and they had no lube.

Are greasable pins worth the money???
Whats the best sort of grease to use?

If you going to use poly bushs, greasy shackles are required otherwise the heat destroys them quicker than the the rubber.
You can get the Beltons greasables pins and shackles for about $200-$250 AUD to do the whole cruiser.

I'm with DEVO on this one. Grease them every oil change at a minimum or if they start to squeek. The OME info says to use moly grease-just like the knuckle. I can't imagine not installing greasable shackles if you are doing suspension work-then lubing the suspension bushings is a 5 minute job.

i guess i shouldn't be lazy finding the grease gun. Still trying to organize the garage but having a hard time throwing things out.
