Just wondering if anyone has had their 62 painted and how much it cost. Also, any threads on changing the square headlights of a 62 to round 60 lights?

Thanks,

400 big ones at Earl Scheib (including some body work). I've washed the truck a couple of times and the paint stayed on!!!

Thanks,

Give the squares a little time to grow on you. I had put the parts together to swap them out when I finally decided they're cool.

I paid $400 just for paint...and that was the cheap stuff. When you include labor and any body work You can pay anywhere from $ 1200 to $4000 depending on quality. Now if you have rust and body damage...that would be priceless.

Post up a pic of your truck and you might get a some better guestimates

Paid $3000 to have a total repaint and all dents fixed. As I recall, there was damage to a front fender, a rocker panel, and a few assorted dents. No rust. It would have cost less if we had not changed colors, which meant all the doors and hatch had to be redone.
Incidentally, we were told that any paint having red pigment in it will cost more because of the paint component cost. That can include some brownish colors.
This price was on a FJ60 but should be the same. Paint job prices are all over the board but I am wary of extremely cheap quotes. On the other had, some shops can make ridiculous quotes...a dealership quoted us $7000!

This is a similar question to "What's my car worth?" The answer will vary wildly, depending on the shape of the vehicle and the quality of job you want. As far as looks are concerned, 90%+ of a paint job is the prep work. Amount of rust, body work, number of layers of paint existing, integrity of existing paint, mask or remove parts not painted, laser straight or waves acceptable, amount of orange peel acceptable, same or different color, are all factors that impact total cost. And like oil, quality paints are getting very expensive, reds and yellows generally the worst. $400 to $500 a gallon is not uncommon for the latest technology colors and catalyzed primers and clear coats are $200 each and up. The good news is with the latest guns paint goes farther than it used to.
So to answer your question, if you want minimal prep and do not mind fleet paint, $400 - $500 is possible, if you want nice driver quality paint, assuming you do not have much rust or body work required and your existing paint is solid, $2000 - $3000 is reasonable.
On the other end of the spectrum, if you are demanding show quality, $7000 might be cheap.

There is a local body shop that my family has used several times in the last 25 years. They know me as a repeat customer (mostly my wife's cars grrrr...). I asked them to quote my FJ60. They recommended stripping down to metal to "do it right" and the total quote was just over $9000. I'm sure they would have done a great job, but that's at least twice what the whole truck is worth. It makes Krylon start to look pretty attractive.

I'd look at a midrange job at Miracle or a place like that for $1500 or so. That will be fine for a Cruiser unless it's a show car for you. Expect to redo every 7-10 years unless it strictly lives inside.

I was quoted $3500 on my 60 and that included taking care of the few rust spots I have as well as welding in a complete new rear passenger quarter.....i got some rock rash

Thanks to everyone for their thoughts. I am in the process of hopefully purchasing a cruiser with a few paint issues and was just looking for estimates. I appreciate all the input. The body is solid on the truck, no rust, just clear coat issues really. I'm not looking to get the truck to show quality and if the burned out clear coat doesn't cause a problem and promote rust, I could probably go years without even thinking about it. Thanks again.

If you are not looking for show quality, there is the Rustoleum option. and no i am not kidding. look in the paint section for it. it has been done before with decent results.

You might get away with wet sanding the hood and roof and having a new coat of clear put on it. My 60 series hood was starting to look that. I used Meguire's Diamond Cut buffing compound on it and got it pretty good and then I painted the center hump. Flat black is pretty common in the Cruiser world for the hood. I of course had to be different and painted a US flag on the hood.

Had mine done at a classics resatoration spot. There was some pretty good body and rust work to be taken care of but it set me back a $3800. It looks stellar we decided to take back to the original two-tone light blue up top darker blue below all original colors from toyota.

Now its in pieces for a full motor rebuild:bang:

Did my old car with Tremclad paint. Lookes great and nevr needed to be waxed. Buy a gallon, thin it out to almost water like, then apply with high density foam roller, the one with the round tip. Go two coata at a time then allow a day for the paint to flash. Repeat until your happy with the results. Took a total of 6 coats on the Golf to get it the way I wanted it. I plan to do my FJ62 the same way I did my Dub, the chap way. Besides, you pay for the prep, not the paint itself... Rather drink beer and shake a can at the thing than wory about scratching a 10K paint job out in the trails.

My 2 cents...

I had my 60 done - it came to somewhere around 3200.00 and I am very happy. My suggestion is have them wetsand it after paint. Makes a 3200 paintjob look like a 9000 paintjob, well I guess that depends on whose wetsanding it also.
